Delay in recorded show starting

Every time I turn on my tv, or even if it has been on for awhile, I try to start watching a recorded program and get the message"delay in starting to play this program-please wait". I have to restart the dvr, sometimes it takes several tries, then it will play. How do I fix this? Or what could be causing this?
