I thought a lot of Texans already use 85 as a minimum speed!  Smiley Happy

Yup, I come close to that, but have been passed at 80 or 90!  A lot of open road heading west is already 70-75; city freeways are at 60, feeders (frontage) at 50.

I'd like to see the train (come back), but a fast bullet one that goes to and from Galveston, Houston, San Antonio, San Marcos, and maybe Dallas. Smiley Happy  I could take a nap!

Maybe they should try that here.  15 years ago they finished a toll road here.  It was funded by bonds with the tolls to pay the bond holders.  The problem has been that the path they used for the road ends up so long that it saves little time, and the tolls are (IMHO) about double what they should be.  And they keep raising them trying to catch up to be able to make the interest payments to the bond holders.  I live near one end and can drive over it on a bridge where I can see a half mile in each direction.  Maximum number of cars ever seen simultaneously on that stretch: 7.

Maybe if people were allowed to drive 85 they'd get some riders.

That road won't be from Houston...yet...but agree they should make more express lanes!

We had HOV lanes on I-10 in my area, and they worked well.  After the Katrina evac disaster, they ended up removing the concrete barricades and replacing them with removable, flexible posts.  Now they can easily remove those posts and free up those lanes for making the whole freeway a one-way road out.

Our HOV turned into a toll road a while back, now two lanes and plenty of people on it.  One big problem we used to have was if a bus/vehicle broke down, you were stuck.  Now with the 2nd lane, it clears up quick.

People who use the toll roads here a lot can get a pass sticker that reads automatically and you don't even have to slow down (much)!

1. I believe this should be WOTT #253.   #252 was last week.  I don't know how to change it or if it is even possible for an ACE to do so.

2. A speed limit of 85 mph is insane.  That means my personally self-imposed 75 mph as the highest speed I will drive (and only under special circumstances) would be 10 mph slower than other cars driving the limit AND since we all know, if the limit is 85, a very large percentage of drivers will push it to around 90. The highway will be even more unsafe to drive on.  Human reaction times are just too slow to handle emergencies at that speed.   Life is becoming less and less important in the scheme of things.

3. If anyone is still reading this.....

Those who might be interested in purchase a new digital camera....compact or DSLR....might want to purchase the October, 2012 PCWorld issue.  There is an excellent quick review of a whole bunch of cameras in various price ranges...of different types....and capabilities.  It is truly amazing the features that come in small packages these day.

4.  And, as bonus, a nice article in this same issue on the Ultrathin, Ultrafast, Ultrabooks.  They take a look at 12 of them.....if you're interested.

I took the liberty of changing the subject line to Weekly Off-Topic Thread #253.

Will Mt. Fuji erupt anytime soon?  There are indications that a horrible disaster may be coming in the not too distant future:

I saw that, I'd be leary.  Of course, I worked in the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius for 3 year while I was in the Navy and in the 90's was already past due to erupt.  At least with today's technology we have earlier indicators and monitors in place.

I think I noticed a little side story about Mount Etna in the process of erupting.  I'm trying to remember exactly where it is located.  Oh yeah....Sicily.  She erupted in January and February and has burped several times since.  But I guess it is fairly quiet now .  I see all these stories about volcanoes blowing their tops and all the quake activity and....although I know it is stupid....the date December 21, 2012 keeps popping into my mind.

By the way there is a 3 football field length rock coming our way which will be closest to earth on September 14th.  But....we're safe....for now.  It will 7.5 times the lunar distance from us at that point and the moon is "roughly" 250,000 miles from us in its not-quite-circular orbit of Earth.

Then.....there is Yellow Stone Crater in Wyoming.  It is past due...based on dating of previous eruptions.  It is one of the few "super" volcanoes on the planet.  When it goes much of the central U.S. will suffer consequences and the entire globe will be affected by the debris and gases floating in the atmosphere.

I'll try to think for a while and come up with some more cheery thoughts.

Well since there coming out with 85mph highways, and I might have to quickly flee an erupting volcano, I may have to trade my ole' Grand Cherokee in on one of these 1,000 hp Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8's! Smiley Very Happy

I'm impressed.  The Audi driver RT wasn't very good, but that's one fast Jeep.  Expected the GT-R to win the Skyline is one of the fast production cars made.  Much cheaper than a Bugatti.

Re: Weekly Off-Topic Thread #253

Yeah Spd, don't think I could even afford the insurance on that SRT8 Jeep let alone the monthly payments.

Agree OUfan, it's pretty impressive that Jeep could beat 2 of those high HP cars, especially since a big box isn't very streamlined.

Phil, not quite a stock engine in that SRT8 and just slightly altered as can be seen/read below.

"The guys at DragTimesInfo in Russia have put together another one of their epic races, this time including a 1000hp Jeep versus an Audi R8 V10. After that, they pitch the Jeep up against a tuned Switzer Nissan GT-R with 850hp, and then a BMW X6 M tuned by Evotec with 620hp.

Under the bonnet of the Jeep sits a stroker version of the 6.1-litre HEMI V8, expanded out to 7.2 litres, with a supercharger pushing air through a front-mounted intercooler and into the engine to provide 1000hp. By the sounds of it, it features a centrifugal-type under-bonnet blower."

(from http://performancedrive.com.au/video-1000hp-jeep-grand-cherokee-srt8-vs-850hp-switzer-nissan-gt-r/)

There must be a lot of Jeep enthusiasts who like the video I posted since it's had 1.3M hits!

I haven't seen the GC STR8 on the local Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge showroom floor but was surprised to see the below "Mopar Challenger Drag Pac" for sale there for about $85.5K. It was white just like the photos in the link and believe that 512 cid hemi V-10 engine may have also developed 1,000 HP.
