I thought a lot of Texans already use 85 as a minimum speed!  Smiley Happy

Yup, I come close to that, but have been passed at 80 or 90!  A lot of open road heading west is already 70-75; city freeways are at 60, feeders (frontage) at 50.

I'd like to see the train (come back), but a fast bullet one that goes to and from Galveston, Houston, San Antonio, San Marcos, and maybe Dallas. Smiley Happy  I could take a nap!

Maybe they should try that here.  15 years ago they finished a toll road here.  It was funded by bonds with the tolls to pay the bond holders.  The problem has been that the path they used for the road ends up so long that it saves little time, and the tolls are (IMHO) about double what they should be.  And they keep raising them trying to catch up to be able to make the interest payments to the bond holders.  I live near one end and can drive over it on a bridge where I can see a half mile in each direction.  Maximum number of cars ever seen simultaneously on that stretch: 7.

Maybe if people were allowed to drive 85 they'd get some riders.

That road won't be from Houston...yet...but agree they should make more express lanes!

We had HOV lanes on I-10 in my area, and they worked well.  After the Katrina evac disaster, they ended up removing the concrete barricades and replacing them with removable, flexible posts.  Now they can easily remove those posts and free up those lanes for making the whole freeway a one-way road out.

Our HOV turned into a toll road a while back, now two lanes and plenty of people on it.  One big problem we used to have was if a bus/vehicle broke down, you were stuck.  Now with the 2nd lane, it clears up quick.

People who use the toll roads here a lot can get a pass sticker that reads automatically and you don't even have to slow down (much)!

1. I believe this should be WOTT #253.   #252 was last week.  I don't know how to change it or if it is even possible for an ACE to do so.

2. A speed limit of 85 mph is insane.  That means my personally self-imposed 75 mph as the highest speed I will drive (and only under special circumstances) would be 10 mph slower than other cars driving the limit AND since we all know, if the limit is 85, a very large percentage of drivers will push it to around 90. The highway will be even more unsafe to drive on.  Human reaction times are just too slow to handle emergencies at that speed.   Life is becoming less and less important in the scheme of things.

3. If anyone is still reading this.....

Those who might be interested in purchase a new digital camera....compact or DSLR....might want to purchase the October, 2012 PCWorld issue.  There is an excellent quick review of a whole bunch of cameras in various price ranges...of different types....and capabilities.  It is truly amazing the features that come in small packages these day.

4.  And, as bonus, a nice article in this same issue on the Ultrathin, Ultrafast, Ultrabooks.  They take a look at 12 of them.....if you're interested.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other peoples' money. .......Margaret Thatcher

I saw that, I'd be leary.  Of course, I worked in the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius for 3 year while I was in the Navy and in the 90's was already past due to erupt.  At least with today's technology we have earlier indicators and monitors in place.

I think I noticed a little side story about Mount Etna in the process of erupting.  I'm trying to remember exactly where it is located.  Oh yeah....Sicily.  She erupted in January and February and has burped several times since.  But I guess it is fairly quiet now .  I see all these stories about volcanoes blowing their tops and all the quake activity and....although I know it is stupid....the date December 21, 2012 keeps popping into my mind.

By the way there is a 3 football field length rock coming our way which will be closest to earth on September 14th.  But....we're safe....for now.  It will 7.5 times the lunar distance from us at that point and the moon is "roughly" 250,000 miles from us in its not-quite-circular orbit of Earth.

Then.....there is Yellow Stone Crater in Wyoming.  It is past due...based on dating of previous eruptions.  It is one of the few "super" volcanoes on the planet.  When it goes much of the central U.S. will suffer consequences and the entire globe will be affected by the debris and gases floating in the atmosphere.

I'll try to think for a while and come up with some more cheery thoughts.

I'm impressed.  The Audi driver RT wasn't very good, but that's one fast Jeep.  Expected the GT-R to win the Skyline is one of the fast production cars made.  Much cheaper than a Bugatti.

Yeah Spd, don't think I could even afford the insurance on that SRT8 Jeep let alone the monthly payments.

Agree OUfan, it's pretty impressive that Jeep could beat 2 of those high HP cars, especially since a big box isn't very streamlined.

Phil, not quite a stock engine in that SRT8 and just slightly altered as can be seen/read below.

"The guys at DragTimesInfo in Russia have put together another one of their epic races, this time including a 1000hp Jeep versus an Audi R8 V10. After that, they pitch the Jeep up against a tuned Switzer Nissan GT-R with 850hp, and then a BMW X6 M tuned by Evotec with 620hp.

Under the bonnet of the Jeep sits a stroker version of the 6.1-litre HEMI V8, expanded out to 7.2 litres, with a supercharger pushing air through a front-mounted intercooler and into the engine to provide 1000hp. By the sounds of it, it features a centrifugal-type under-bonnet blower."

(from http://performancedrive.com.au/video-1000hp-jeep-grand-cherokee-srt8-vs-850hp-switzer-nissan-gt-r/)

There must be a lot of Jeep enthusiasts who like the video I posted since it's had 1.3M hits!

I haven't seen the GC STR8 on the local Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge showroom floor but was surprised to see the below "Mopar Challenger Drag Pac" for sale there for about $85.5K. It was white just like the photos in the link and believe that 512 cid hemi V-10 engine may have also developed 1,000 HP.

Nice work coming out of the Chrysler group these days.  I watched a deal on 60 minutes (i think) about the new CEO of Chrysler who also is the CEO of Fiat.  His vision seems to have turned the manufacturer around 180 degrees.  Upgraded several plants, instilled quality and quantity at the same time, etc.  He said they already paid back the federal bailout money and are turning a very good profit.  Nice work and kudos to him for accepting the challange.

On another note, I ordered and received my first wireless printer.  I have no idea how I have lived this long without one of these jewels.  Its a simple Dell V525w all in one but I am really impressed by the functionality.  My wife can now print, fax, scan, etc. from her laptop too!!  Points in that dept for me!!Smiley Very Happy  We both have iPhone 4s and so I tried to print from them but it was a no go.Smiley Mad  Did some research via Google and found that the firmware of the printer had to be updated to allow printing from tablets, iPhones, etc.  Went to the Dell support site and after much more research was able to finally update the printer.

Both her company email and my company email are delivered to our iPhones as well as office computers.  I opened an email that had an attachment and went to print and whaa laaaa, success!!  Showed the wife my new found knowledge and that she could also print from her iPhone.  More points for me!!!Smiley Very Happy

So it appears I'm up around 4 or 5 points to the good side.  Wonder how long I will remain on the plus side?  They sure seem to disappear faster than i can gain them............Smiley Surprised

Thats f really fast Jeep.  The only problem I have with it is, it's a Chrysler.  I have had very bad experiences with a Chrysler product.  But one thing you can say about them is, they are some of the best looking cars/trucks.

Hey, BB, I may be hitting you up for advice, LOL!

Thinking of moving a 64-bit laptop in my office, to replace the 32-bit tower and display.  Got it all loaded up, but found that the only software not compatible is the printer!  I'd like to be able to print from my phone, too!  I'm guessing devices just find it, no more setting up sharing on your home network?

Spd-----I first had to connect the printer via USB and of course load the printer software on my laptop.  There was a Dell tutorial to follow to set up the wireless part but I didn't find it too useful.  I ended up using the "set up your network manually" function.  Put in the SSID, encryption type, RG wireless password and up it came on the network.  I did have to load the print drivers on the wifes laptop but once loaded it discovered the printer automatically and set it as the default.

As for the iPhones didn't have to do anything to them, well of course after the firmware update to the printer so they saw it.  Opened document and hit print.  Done......

Oh I forgot to mention the iPhones have to be on your local network WiFi to print of course but I had done that to both of our phones when we first got them so as to cut down on the internet usage thru AT&T 4G.  Don't want to go over my 2G limit and get charged.Smiley Mad

Guess I know what I'll be looking at for Christmas!   I want another All-In-One, the HP has been great for my needs, except for the not-working sometimes on the Wi-Fi network at home.  First step, check out price of ink cartridges!

The only reason I got the dell that I did was the price and separate ink cartridges.  I looked on labor day and this printer was $129 minus $50 off for labor day, and free shipping.  So only $86 delivered.  Has the separate ink for black, and the three colors.  It seemed that on my old printer I was always replacing the color cartridge when just one color was out.  I'll see how this one does.

SPD.....did you go to the mfg's web site to support and see if there was a 64 bit update or version of your printer's software available for download?

Our HP C310 wireless printer/scanner was on sale by HP and then Staples had another $50 off so I got it for $99.95.  It uses black, photo black, yellow, cyan & magenta inks....all separate cartridges.  I purchase ONLY genuine HP inks and I buy the extra capacity loads.  Saves about a third.  I also use ONLY HP papers.  And, interestingly enough,  I don't use the premium versions.  For my color photos I have discovered that the "Every Day Photo Paper" produces the sharpest details in the images.  The more expensive papers may dry more quickly but in all of them the details are ever so slightly soft.  I'm a fanatic for sharpness.

The printer "sees" my router and so every laptop....my wife's iPad and her iPhone all communicate with the printer through the wireless router.  The printer is Apple Air Print compatible and required no set up for that.  It just worked right off the bat.  The printer also has its own E-mail address.  I can transmit an image or document to it from anywhere and it will print out here at home.  I leave my printer turned on full time.  It goes to sleep when not in use but wakes up on demand.  That saves some power.  I have given a couple of my close friends and my sons that E-mail address also.

My desktop is plugged into Ethernet port on my router so it also communicates with the printer via the wireless capability of the router.  The only cable to my printer is the one to the electric outlet.

The scanner uses LED light source.  It's not super speedy but fast enough for me.  Scanning can be done from any of the PC's or making copies can be done at the printer without use of PC.  Also flash memory card can be removed from my camera and plugged into the port on the printer so I can make prints of my photos without turning on a PC.  There is a fairly large touch screen on the front from which all these functions can be controlled.....as well as minimal set-up commands.   My model is now discontinued in favor of a newer one.  The price dropped to $50 as they were getting rid of stock.  But I think I got a good deal....and it has worked flawlessly with not one problem in two years.

The CD software took me to the site, but I didn't do a direct search (on my list to do).  We just use the one printer for the whole house (sans Mac, it had problems with printer drivers when it was new).  Problem is that desktop hibernates, and when it does, it will (sometimes) take the printer off-line (technically) with it.

Used Airport's USB (originally the purpose of that purchase to work with the Mac!), but software only works on a direct connection to a computer.

At this point, I might as well take it back to Airport since printer software is buggy.  And I know when ink is running low, I can SEE!  Keep spare cartridges.  Brings me to another situation,  Airport's latest update does not work on the 32-bit machine, it locks me out!  Can access via iPhone with update, but have to keep it rolled back one to access settings via desktop.  (This has already been sorted out with a nice guy on this forum.)  Smiley Wink

Phil, I will check HPs site sometime this week and see what I come up with.  But I would like to print from my phone sometimes, and one I have is NOT capable of that.

SPD....the printer has to be "air-print" compatible to be able to print from an iPad or iPhone.  All the current HP models are capable of it.

I think THIS  one is the current version of the printer I have.  It has the extra large touch-view screen.  HP claims that they have improved their drivers on the PhotoSmart series that they no longer need to use the many multiple ink reservoirs so they are back down to 4 tanks.....black, yellow, cyan & magenta.   Personally I think I get really quite excellent photo and color reproduction in the prints I make on mine.

This one I gave you the link to is the same list price mine was.....but, as I said, I watched the weekly sale ads from the various sources like BB, Office Depot and (my favorite) Staples.  I was able to get mine for 50% off of list.

This morning is annual dentist check.  How I love THAT.  Gotta go.  Chat at ya all later.

Funny you should say that about the dentist.  I was sitting in the dentist's chair the morning of 9/11/2001.  The dentist was checking the TV between patients.  When I left his office, the story was two airliners had hid the World Trade Center.  When I reached the office, I was told one of them had fell; I was incredulous.

Anyway, last year I bought a new network multifunction printer, the Epson Artison 730.  Staples had it on sale, then it went on a better sale the next day and I went and got that money back.  I used my Staples reward credit and ended up spending less than $100 for it.  It has AirPrint (which required a firmware download), but no iPhones in my house (though there are a couple of iPods).  I can print from my Android phone.  I can email documents to it.  Even for me this was all "wow, it can do that???"

The main two reasons for buying this particular model are: (1)  photo quality from 6 ink tanks and (2) Printable CD/DVD capability.  The scanner is very easy to use and does a nice job.  The drawback... Epson Ink.

I had Epsons and they usually had the best photo prints and it was nice to be able to print cd/dvd labels but the ink was the highest of the leading printers.

i have been in the HP printer camp since I also like their control over scanning with a Mac better.

I've had just about every brand except Epson.

When printer gets replaced, it must have a flat top as it has to do double-duty as a cat bed! Smiley Very Happy

Actually got the current printer free with Mac purchase, and it would never work with the Mac (how I ended up with it).  Some people in this house are impatient!  I'm sure they have drivers for it by now, and the Mac can just access the home network for printing.

I always found if you hook the printer up via USB then hit software update under the Apple  it will see it and fetch what is needed for the Mac.

Later versions of OSX when a networking printer or wireless is used look under shared in Finder then make sure its listed if so hit software update.

Then in preferences make sure the printer you are using shows up under printers.

On the PC side go to the mfg's website and download the latest drivers/firmware for your printer.

On the Linux side do the same as the Mac it should see it then hit software update in the right column under the gear.
