Weekly Off-Topic Thread #252

My golly.....another week gone.  We're supposed to get some rain today as Isaac very slowly moves north.  But I checked the radar and he seems to be dissolving away rapidly as he begins to edge into Southern Missouri.   So I don't know if we're going to get much.  Everything is SO brown.  I've watered trees and landscaping plus I've watered grass about once a month.  Put a soak hose around the house to try and keep the concrete footings safe.  Lots of people are having severe problems with foundation failure as the ground dries and pulls away from them.

Anyway....just checking and saw that new WOTT had not been started yet so guess it was about my turn anyway.   Everyone have a great week and stay safe.

Phil

The older we get, the faster time passes...why is that?  Smiley Sad

We're supposed to get rain starting tomorrow; not brown like we were last year, but we could use some rain!  Think I'll wash the car today, that should do it!

Smiley Very HappyHappy Friday all.

Yup, yard is not as brown as it was at the beginning of the month but still needs help. We have even/odd watering here, so I wont be to water until the 2nd. I'll get the hose and sprinkler set up tomorrow afternoon so I can go out at 3am and start watering. We only get from midnight till 9am and and 6pm till midnight on our days. Hopefully we'll get a little rain before that. We've been getting some rain, but still about ~10 inches shy for our average.

Congrats Phil and Spd.  If we get another two Aces in this thread, someone's gonna get shot for cheatin'  Smiley Wink

The guy that does our lawn came by and gave me the bad news, most of the back (60 percent?) and one side are g-o-n-e.  Will have to be aerated and overseeded.

We are supposed to get some heavy rain from Isaac.  One model is calling for 6-7" of rain in Indianapolis.  There are some forecast models that are calling for much less.  In 2004 (IIRC) we had a similar scenario and picked up 9" of rain on Labor Day.  We went across a bridge that got washed out 3 hours after we passed it.  We also had water in our slab / furnace pit but it was gone in 2 hours, after the rain stopped.

The NWS forecast calls for almost 6" of rain.

  • Tonight A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71. South southwest wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Saturday A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 8am. High near 80. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Saturday Night Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 69. South southeast wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
  • Sunday Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 81. Southeast wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
  • Sunday Night A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Cloudy, with a low around 71. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Heaviest part of Isaac went east of us.  But the center of rotation is currently located about 50 miles straight south of our home location.  It started raining this morning.  By around noon we'd had about an inch and we have had pretty much steady....but soft....rain ever since.  A good, soaking rain with minimal run-off.  Looks like the local high schools will be playing Friday night football in the rain.

Congrats to all on their awards.  Guess I need to go read the instructions.  I'm getting too old for change.  But I'll give it the old college try.

Glad to see you are safe Phil.  The hurricane itself wasn't the problem this time, it was how slow it was moving and how much rain it's dumping.  Wonder if this will help fill the Mississippi River.
