Weekly Off-Topic Thread #250

Wow, the big #250 WOTT!

Today's my wife and I's 38th anniversary so were getting ready to go pig-out at Red Lobster! My wife's fav is lobster tails and mine is king crab. Just cheap stuff... LOL.

So what did I do on my anniversary while the wife was working? Back in early July my son was taking care of the place (yeah power outage week) and cleared my old garden area about 30'x100' of 4' high pure poison ivy, wild grapevine and briars. Of course it's growing back so sprayed it with a home remedy herbicide. Used 1 gal white vinegar, 1 cup of salt, and 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap so it will stick to the plants leaves. Applied about 1 1/2 gals.

This homemade herbicide has to be a lot cheaper than Roundup but it doesn't kill the roots. W/o leaves supposedly the plants will die off. I know one thing, I can't wait until that vinegar dries because does my yard stink! Smiley Very Happy

Re: Weekly Off-Topic Thread #250

Thanks SKP and we did! Kind of disappointed Red Lobster doesn't carry king crab legs on their menu for a few months due to high off-season pricing. That darn Deadliest Catch show must have made them too popular and in high demand! LOL.

But they do have an "Endless Shrimp" deal going on right now where for $15 you can have all the shrimp you can eat, with 2 sides, made about 5 different ways. Wife was a happy camper with a monster-sized frozen strawberry margarita and a big lobster tail. I ended up bringing home almost a whole order of scrimp scampi, shrimp alfredo and a big bag of their real good rolls as leftovers. Pretty good deal and I had a $25 gift card which helped. Smiley Wink

What a change of weather here and only 50 degrees. High pressure system will bring us sunny days with 80 during the day and mid-50's at night all week. Nice! Smiley Happy

Re: Weekly Off-Topic Thread #250

Belated best wishes on your anniversary, Uni.  Hope you have 38 more.  We're up to 56 1/2.  Some how she has put up with me all these years.

Our promotional deal on the 1 yr. of 18 mbps Internet for no extra charge ran out on the 15th.  I called in to see if there were any new good promotions available but got a negative response on that.  We could step back to 12 mbps but we're both spoiled now so guess we'll live with the $10 per month boost in our bill.   Y'know....it's scary.  Have any of you folks ever multiplied your AT&T bill by 12 just to see how much you are spending per year with this company?????  I DID!!!  Our services include 2 cell phones (1 smart phone) on a family plan......U-300 U-verse service...plus premium HD pkg. and HD service.....and finally, 18 mbps Internet.  It all comes to about $3,000 per year!!!!

We had dropped our land-line service about a year ago and we recently stepped down from U-450 to U-300 U-verse or it would be even higher.   I haven't put my thinker to work on it yet but I find myself wondering how much it would save us to drop U-verse TV....keep the Internet service....watch local TV OTA and pick up movies and other programming by streaming from Internet.  My new Phillips 32" LED back in my "office" is a "smart" type set.  It was easy to set up and it connects with the Internet wirelessly.  It has a large selection of video and movie web sites available.  I have set it up but have not yet tried watching a program via the Internet on it.  Guess I'll have to try it out and see if I like it.  A bit of research to see if cutting way back on our subscribed services would be realistic.  I tell ya.....don't know if the rest of you are feeling the pinch....but somethings gotta give somewhere.

Perhaps some of you have already tried this.  If so I'd be interested in hearing about it.  I realize that, "at the end of the day" it might end up being a toss up cost wise.  Think I'm gonna go out and buy some AT&T stock.

Mother nature is teasing us with clouds again this evening.  But so far no rain.  Cooler temps. however have been welcome.  Alfie and I walked our full mile route this morning.  It was in the upper 60's.  Delightful.  Now I'm watering my trees with my deep watering device.  It sticks in the ground about 3 feet and injects the water downward toward the roots instead of running off on the surface.  Trees are dying around here like crazy.  What a disaster.  We just can't buy rain.  Our drought is around 80 days now and we are in part of the hardest hit area in central U.S.  Well.....we do what we always do.....endure.

Re: Weekly Off-Topic Thread #250

Hey Phil, although there is no enforcedcap on Uverse supposedly because they haven't figured out how to segregate IPTV from the rest of the IP traffic, if you drop the IPTV then they wouldn't have to worry about that segregation, and you may very well find that the cap can be enforced. That would put a crimp on your streaming TV. Smiley Sad

Re: Weekly Off-Topic Thread #250

Yeah, C.J.    I am concerned about that too.  I just haven't  had a chance to do some figuring (takes longer these days than it used to).   I'd have to contact AT&T and try to nail them down on caps and/or what the extra charge would be if we ran over our limit.  To be honest I haven't kept up on the cap situation since we haven't had to worry about it.  However, it's my understanding that some services have set up a price scale for additional blocks of data over the basic in a month's time.  Don't know if AT&T has done that or not.  But you're right....it might turn out to be a toss up on total dollars spent.

It's true that AT&T isn't enforcing the cap on U-Verse.  But the idea that the reason they aren't is that they can't separate IPTV and Internet traffic is preposterous.  This is a myth started by some of the masterminds over at DSL Reports who believe that evidence is simply optional.

IPTV, VOIP, and Internet travel on the VDSL circuit on separate virtual circuits (basically on separate VLANs) so that traffic management policies can be implemented.  There is no reason whatsoever that traffic couldn't be separately counted at the same time.

AT&T is has simply chosen not to enforce the policy because it's not in their best interest.  There is a small group of customers that would leave and go to another service if they enforced it, and right now there's no reason to weather the loss of those customers.  It's written into their terms of service so that they can enforce it at a later time if they deem it necessary (e.g. if other ISPs begin to do so).

Re: Weekly Off-Topic Thread #250

Is Xfiniity doing caps?  I still get mail from Comcrap, guess I should read the fine print?

Yeah, a ton of money for entertainment, but guess it's cheap if you don't go out to movies, clubs, or the opera? Smiley Very Happy  We still have landline, and it is a lot of money each month for everything.  IF we had new Smart TVs, it would be very tempting to quit UVTV!  Xbox already has a lot of offerings, but think that requires XB Live (which we have).  Who ever thought we'd pay for TV and water in bottles?!  Smiley Very Happy

Congrats, Uni, to you and the missus. Smiley Wink  Did you bring back doggie/kitty bags for the kids?

Re: Weekly Off-Topic Thread #250

Comcast had a 250GB cap until they dropped it in May. They are testing a tiered system.  Time Warner want to put their cap at a very low 40GB.  My guess if they did that Uverse would see a lot of new customers if TWC is a competitor.

It is sad to see what has happened to the U-verse forum on DSL Reports.  It used to be great a forum that you could go to get good information and help.  Now it has become just a gripe fest for a core group of ex-customers and never been customers who are irrationally obsessed with being negative about anything that is AT&T or U-verse.  I stopped participating on that forum some time ago when it began clear the direction that it was heading, and the moderators have done nothing to stop it.  I stop by occasionally to read the posts, and the activity seems to be a lot less than what it used to be.  Perhaps a lot of the old regular users have been driven away.

So Uverse internet customers are important to AT&T, but DSL internet customers can go pound sand? We must really annoy the heck out of them. Like a big infected pimple on the face of Uverse customers serviced counts. I guess if they chased us all off, then they wouldn't have to listen to us complaining becuase they're sitting back on the big fat Uverse butt stuffing their face with green Franklin potato chips thinking 60% coverage is good enough.

As well, according to the letter I got, it was already necessary because 2% of their customers were ruining the internet for the rest of their customers, but I guess rather than let it look like they couldn't control a measly 2% of their customers, they turn it into a way to make more money off all their customers, and put a crimp on all that internet TV nonsense, and have the nerve to claim it's good for us.

Excuse me while I go put my soapbox away.Smiley Wink
