WOTT #254

Friday afternoon and no, new WOTT, so hear goes.

Left last Friday (9/7) and returned on 9/11 Smiley Surprised for a trip to visit Dad and my stepmom in the Sandhills of North Carolina.  Met up with Mark (Escapee) for a few minutes on Monday - he was in the area.  Nice visit, skp.

This trip was my brother's first airplane trip.  He has some mental and emotional ills but he came through just fine.  I really enjoy flying but he was getting the willies just thinking about it.  I really enjoy flying and love the layout of the DC-9/MD 80/90 / Boeing 717 family,  It's a shame that they aren't being produced any longer.  Airtran will be shipping their 717's off to Delta before they switch over to Souithwest in a few years.  I got all of the aircraft numbers from the flight crews (i.e. N923AT) so I can check out their future on aviation websites such as jetphotos.net.

The folks sure are in rough straits, early 80's and their rental house is moldy and crumbling - they have to move but not sure where to turn.  No running vehicles, either.  Too far away for a weekend visit to help them.

Have a good weekend!

Wow, Dave.  I'm really sorry to hear about your folks' dilemma.  Is it possible they could be moved to an assisted living facility?  Sticking my nose in here (again) but as an idea....we have church supported living facilities for the very elderly around here.  I think the way it works is that all assets are pledged to the supporting organization and the folks are taken care of.....at various levels of care, as needed.  My retired school teacher cousin lived in one.....a nice apt. from which she was moved to more assisted, adjacent facility and....eventually to a nursing facility as she reached the end of her life.  The church's organization that operated the facility handled everything.  It was across the street from a hospital and medical center with tunnel access under the street.  Of course when she passed on what was left of any estate she had went to the organization.  There were some well-off folks living there and some folks that had nothing.  But only the management knew who was who so all were treated equally.   I was impressed.   It must be very difficult with you being so far away.  I certainly hope you can work something out.

Re: WOTT #254

And here I thought you were kidding about meeting up with SKP!  Glad y'all got to meet.

I had a friend, and she was moved to a place like Phil mentioned.  She moved to CT from Houston, no family; and all of her friends were elsewhere or stayed in Houston. Smiley Sad

They took really good care of her, and she lived to be 97!  We used to exchange mutual birthday cards every year, receiving the same one from each other, LOL!  This was a hold-over from what we did in the office when we worked together.  I would call her on our birthday, until one year the phone answered and I was told she wasn't there.  Wouldn't give any info (privacy laws), so I feared the worst.

I had her social worker's email and contacted him.  Sadly, she passed away a month before our birthday. Smiley Sad  He was glad that she had a friend who kept in touch.  This guy was great in helping me keep in contact with her, he even mailed a hand-written letter to me that my friend dictated.  I asked for some photos of her, sent a disposable camera with postage paid (before digital!), and he obliged.

I felt really bad that I could not go to help, but a couple of years after she retired, she would write me about all kinds of strange things going on in her condo.  It didn't dawn on me then, but it was early dementia. Smiley Sad  She was moved away and it took me a couple of years to track her down (before the Internet!).

Truly faithful friends are hard to come by, SPD.  Good for you, staying in touch with your elderly co-worker.  I'm sure she looked forward to hearing from you.

Dave:  Great.  You got to meet SKP.  Geez I wish that could happen for some of the rest of us who have been on here so long.  It would be great.

Re: WOTT #254

Thanks.  Smiley Happy  Every year my BD rolls around, I think of her.  She was a Sgt. in the Army and guys at the office would give her a hard time, but she took no guff from anyone!

I've only met 2 people with the same birth day, guess it's kinda rare?

Well.....I did what probably is a foolish thing.  Had a BB gift card that I'd been hanging onto since my BD.  Couldn't think of anything I really needed.....so started thinking about what new toy I might like to have that I did not need.  Anyway.......I ended up doing some research and then went to BB and found a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8 pocket, point-and-shoot camera.  I'd like to have a camera with me all the time or at least....most of the time.  But I don't want to have to carry around my Canon DSLR on an every day basis.

This little camera came out in 2011 and was on sale.  So I ended up getting it for about $50 off.  It is a 14 mp resolution unit.....with a 16X almost-super zoom lens on it.  In 35 mm camera terms that is equivalent to 24mm wide angle to 384mm telephoto....all in one lens. And it has both normal and macro settings. The lens is branded with the Leica name and the reviews I read were excellent.  It also shoots 720p HD video but I doubt that I'll hardly ever use that feature.  When I brought it home and started digging into the features, capabilities and menus I was nearly overwhelmed by all the stuff it has.   And such a small package too.  Perfectly pocket sized.  When it is turned off the lens completely retracts into the camera body and a protective shutter closes over the front of the lens.  The camera body is metal....not plastic.  So it's a little bit heavier but feels quite sturdy in my hand.  Only thing I don't like is having to use the LCD screen as a viewfinder.  I prefer an optical finder.  Well...can't have everything I guess.  I'm still playing around with it and learning all the ins and outs.

Pictures are bright and super sharp.  Color is well saturated and seems very accurate.  I think I'm gonna like it.  But it produces images only in JPEG format files.  There is a JPEG standard setting and a FINE setting which results in larger files and, of course, less compression.....thus better quality image.  THAT is the one I will be using.  An 8 gb SD card will hold almost 1,400 images when I use that higher quality setting.  I think I can manage to get by with that.

Image files are abou 5 mb in size so I had to really compress a couple to get them small enough in size that Uverse forum would accept them.

These are not as razor sharp as my original files....caused by the severe compression required to be able to insert them here.  But they give some idea of what I'm getting.

Good for you, and nice enough photos (compressed).  That's the same reason I like my Canon Elph, fits in a pocket and takes much better photos than the iP, even though less mp's!  Think you'll enjoy your new toy a lot!

We'll be expecting some pictures of Alfie this winter doing snow-tunneling.  Smiley Very Happy

Re: WOTT #254

Thanks for the tips Phil and Spd.  I may contact the county's social services arm to see if they have any pointers.  Skp will tell you that since the mills closed, the Rockingham, Laurinburg area is in sad shape.  I do see some warehouses and manufacturing facilities sprouting alongside US 74 / I-74 in the area.  Now if they would only tie all of the expressway ends together and make 74 a freeway all the way to the Coast, that will help the area(s), even the Central business districts.

I broke off some cotton from a rodaside field and brought it home to my granddaughter,  Ironically, Eli Whitney was the question for Final Jeopardy the day after I got back.

Re: WOTT #254

Okay....kind of a weird survey I just got thru taking from AT&T Uverse.  It was asking about alarm systems and insurance companies/claims.

Wonder if AT&T is going to venture into residential alarms now?  Was asking if I had an alarm, if I received an insurance discount for having one, what paperwork I had to submit to receive the discount, if it was monitored, and if I had any claims and how easy it was to get paid.

Just seemed like a weird survey for Uverse.

Re: WOTT #254

I think those surveys are launched on any ATT.COM site and may have nothing to do with the actual site you're visiting.  But yeah, sounds like they're looking at alarms.

Seems like AT&T used to do home alarms systems in this area.  Most likely an alarm company that had licensed the AT&T brand and logo.  Kind of like Citibank and the Universal Card.

Actually it was an email sent to me and I usually get one about once a month asking to take surveys.  Below is what was sent.  As you can see it has AT&T U-verse all over it but had nothing to do with U-verse.  Most times I get asked about DVR usage, what features I might want to see added, sometimes asking about remotes, etc.

Thanks again for agreeing to participate in our online research panel of AT&T U-verse customers.

Re: WOTT #254

I had that one, too, but since I didn't answer for what they were looking for, I got kicked out.

They did have a monitoring system several years ago, but it was ATT, not through UV.  I bet they are looking at it because Xfinity (fancy Comcrap) has had one for about a year down here.

Maybe another way for them to grab more customers who can't get their current alarm system to work with UV, but think that's really rare now?

Or another way to make an alarm work with VOiP since they want to kill landline. Smiley Mad
