Uverse Gigapower HD Compression

With the deployment of Gigapower, will ATT increase the HD stream bitrate for Uverse?  I'm very close to switching to the Gigapower Uverse Internet and TV, but I'm very hesitant to leave a perfectly good DirecTV picture quality for a lower bitrate service.  I've seen the standard Uverse HD picture and am a little underwhelmed.

Can anybody shed light on this?  What can I expect if I go ahead with the order?

I haven't seen or heard anything about bitrate changing for HD streams.  The only thing mentioned was the ability to receive 5 HD streams and a new 1TB DVR.

I would recommend that you send a Private Message to the ATTU-verseCare Community Specialist team.  One of the specialists will respond to your PM shortly.  Please look for the flashing envelope at the top right of the page for your response from a team member.

One of the team members will be able to answer your question.

"If you find this post helpful and it solved your issue please mark it as a solution.  This will help other forum members locate it and will also let everyone know that it corrected your problem. If they have the same issue they will know how to solve theirs"

I would be amazed if they created a different video feed for use only in one market (Austin).  At some point when there are many, many more subscribers with better bandwidths, they might do something like this.

However, there have been many improvements in U-verse compression over the years, providing a better use of the bitrate that is available.  When was the last time you tried U-verse IPTV?

Hello stonerbot613,

I understand your concern prior to ordering GigaPower with TV. I am not aware of any changes being made to the compression rate for HD streaming. The picture quality will remain competitive for industry standards and you will gain the 300 Mbps Internet speed along with the upgraded DVR.

While I don't have any direct information, the absence of information would tend to indicate that the bitrate will remain the same as all of the other installations.

The National Feeds (all of the common channels) come from two central sites; the local channels are originated from each local market to the local VHO on the same equipment that every other VHO operates.

BTW, DirecTV uses the same bitrate as Uverse and nearly all other services .... about 6 Meg for HD, and 2.5 Meg for SD. There may be some difference in the encoders (manufacturer & settings), but the amount of flow is roughly the same.

FWIW, one of the techs during install told me that they plan to roll out uncompressed streams later in 2014 when the giga speeds come out.  I don't know how accurate or correct that statement is, just repeating what I was told

Techs seem to be as bad about spreading rumours and half truths as any others.
