Sounds like you're connecting your U-Verse STB to the monitor of your PC and not the PC directly. Unless your monitor has some speakers connected to them and can transmit HDMI sound out, you'll need to get a set of external speakers or run a line in to your computer to play the sound.

To connect your STB to the computer I suggest this cable:

http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Audio-Cable-Splitter-1-Mini/dp/B00004Z5CP

To connect your STB to a pair of speakers, I suggest this cable:

http://www.amazon.com/3-5mm-Stereo-Female-Y-Cable-6-Inch/dp/B000I23TTE

If you need a pair of speakers, these have a few good reviews and aren't too expensive:

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-980-000417-Speakers-Z130/dp/B003CP0OT2

When friending me mention that you found me on the AT&T forums.

Not sure if this is relevent but is the monitor HDCP compliant?  There is a lot out there on that but the forum search tool isn't very helpful.  IIRC, it was video that had issues and not audio but it may be worth a look.

Look here.

And here.
