Reverse DNS (Domain Name Service)

Domain Name Service (DNS) is an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Since domain names are alphabetic, they are easier to remember by a customer. The Internet, however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name www.example.com might translate to 198.105.232.4. The DNS system is its own network. If one DNS server does not know how to translate a particular domain name, it asks another one until the correct IP address is returned.

DNS basically has the following functionality to operate: forward/reverse, primary/secondary. Their duties, in understandable terms, are defined as follows:

Forward DNS - Maps a name to an IP address. This is what most people think of when they think DNS (e.g., www.yahoo.com = 66.94.230.32).
Reverse DNS - Maps an IP address to a name. This is very important for finding return paths, particularly with e-mail and security) (e.g., 66.94.230.32 = www.yahoo.com).
Primary DNS - The master that controls forward and reverse.
Secondary DNS - The slave that only takes information from the master and keeps a copy for backup (forward and reverse).

Microsoft has more information on forwarding a DNS.

You can perform a reverse DNS lookup in command prompt for windows.

I was able to submit my request to dnsrequests@att.com, now lets see if they respond!!!

Thanks so much for posting this - its worth a shot for me.

I also got Uverse residential to open port 25 for my email server. But there tech support is useless and when you ask for Tier 2 they don't know what you mean and when I ask what they do with requests they don't know how to answer, they don't know how to answer that.

Was anyone actually able to get AT&T to change their PTR record? No one I speak to, including Connect Tech, has any idea what I am talking about.

PTR records will not be updated for consumer accounts. If you are a commercial account, contact your dedicated business support channel.
