Last Thursday, we had AT&T upgrade our account to the Max Turbo internet service, from the Max service, which was using the 2Wire router. The tech replaced the 2Wire with the Motorola NVG589, and the basic things seemed to be working fine, from the uVerse TV to our laptops. But I noticed a couple of other things were not connecting, and subsequent calls to AT&T proved to be not very helpful. I've got a network camera (which was connected to the router via ethernet cable) and a NEST Learning Thermostat, and neither can/will connect. Calls to both of these folks say it's a firewall issue, and I need to turn the firewall off, or change the settings to allow them to get through, but I have no idea how to do that. Also, I use a remote desktop app to connect to my desktop while out of town, and it no longer connects.
What can I do to change the settings to connect to these things?

The good news is that the other devices are now connected, and working fine. The bad news is that the NEST will connect, but still disconnects after a period of time and shows OFFLINE. There is something keeping the NEST from staying connected to the wireless network, and I don't know what it is.

I do. It's a power-saving mode in the NEST.
