Changing IP.

[ Edited ]

I had U-Verse for almost a year now.My IP has been same since I got u-verse.I had DSL before this and I was able to change my ip when ever I wanted to.With U-verse I tried resetting my modem and it never worked. Is there an way to change my Ip?First I started chatting with U-Verse support and the agent told me to chat with ConnecTech. I chat with the agent and he/she said you need to contact to u-verse.I really wasted my time chatting with them. Can some one really help me change my ip.my modem is Motorola NVG-510. If I can't change my IP I think I might have to disconnect my service. :'(

or is it possible to downgrade my service back to DSL?

Re: Changing IP.

Typically your IP address will not change since your always on the same port in the VRAD.  I have had service since 2008 and mine is still the same.  If a tech switches you to a diffferent port on another card in the VRAD your IP will change.

Another way to get it to change is if you have your router changed out but I'm sure it is yours now so that doesn't seem like a viable solution.

As for going back to DSL...No.  AT&T is phasing out DSL where Uverse is available.

I don't know if I got the message or I accidently deleted it.I called 1800-288-2020 they said my ip is dynamic. And it still hasn't changed for like 8-9 months now.The technician came to my house and tried configuring it he wasn't able to fix it either.I called customer care again and they never fixed my issue. My contract will expire on sep 28 and I'll be disconnecting from AT&T.Bye bye AT&T.

It is dynamic in the sense that a DHCP server assigns the IP address to your gateway when it associates with the AT&T network upon connection.  But, that's really all that makes it "dynamic."  A true static IP address is one that is pre-programmed into a device, computer, or router and uses the same IP address and doesn't send a request to a DHCP server to request an IP address.

There is something called a Static DHCP Assigned IP address.  It is dynamic in the sense that the IP address isn't pre-programmed into the device and that it gets the IP address from a DHCP server but it's static in the sense that the DHCP server has assigned a specific IP address to your Gateway's MAC Address hence the reason why you get the same IP address every time.

Cable companies have this kind of setup as well in which a customer gets the same IP address all the time.  The only way to get a new IP address is to swap out the cable modem.

Every networking device in the world has a unique address called a MAC Address (Wikipedia Link).

Re: Changing IP.

What do you mean by hard reset?

Here is but I've tried Unplug modem for 1 minute and IP still didn't change.I tried leaving it unplugged overnight still didn't change it.I tried resetting it by 192.168.1.254 and it still didn't change.Even the AT&T technician came to my house and he wasn't able to change the IP either.I'm getting my modem replaced it was probably the problem.Because my frined recently got U-verse and he has different modem and he was able to change it.

Re: Changing IP.

The only thing that has ever changed my IP address has been replacing the gateway.  Resetting it and changing ports  in the VRAD have never changed the address, but a new gateway always does.

Actually the IP address has not changed for new gateways or port swaps too for many users that have posted over the years. Smiley Wink

If you are on Uverse internet, it will not change the IP address most likely, as it's tied to your account.   Smiley Wink

Ask him what modem he's using.  I've had the same IP address since 2008, after getting Uverse TV/internet, even though it's listed as dynamic too. Smiley Wink
