How far from the VRAD?
Hi,

I am getting the system installed on Friday & was wondering if there is a way to determine how far I am from the VRAD &/or if fiber comes into my street.

I can see the boxes from the house but the way the streets are laid out its a good distance to actually get to them.

Thanks

Currently, maximum distance is around 3,000 feet.  Keep in mind that is over 1/2 mile.  I believe wire length is the key.....not line of sight distance.  In our case the installing tech determined, with his laptop computer, that we are 2,100 ft. from the VRAD.  We have been subscribers for over 13 months and our service is excellent on both TV and Internet.  We are not voice subscribers so I can't vouch for it.

Thanks for the info.

LOS is a hundred yards or so, but to get there on the street is just shy of a 1/2 mile.  I know the phone company as well as TWC have put in a lot of fiber in this area, North Raleigh, over the past few years.  TWC, which I have now, has fiber into our street but don't know if the phone company does.

Like you I am getting TV & Internet service.

Thanks for the info.

The AT&T guys showed up on time this morning...we are 2100ft from the VRAD.  They are checking the current lines out now.

doesnt sound too shabby ,  he should be able to get pretty good sync rate  at that distance   IMHO

Bear,

I'm also in N. Raleigh and just got service this past Tuesday.  I am 2500ft from the VRAD and I am limited to 1HD/3SD channels, which I'm not thrilled about.  I now have to be selective with which channels I DVR in HD, because if I'm recording in HD, I can't view a HD channel at the same time, which kinda sucks.

That does seem unusual doesn't it Randy?  At our 2100 ft. distance we do have 2SD/2HD and everything works fine.  Our number of corrected blocks is pretty high but uncorrected blocks are very low.

We have 2HD/2SD .

The guy finished up about 3:45 & all seems well.  I have 2 HD flat screens & 2 regular TV's on the system.  The internet is supporting 3 wireless desktops, 3 wireless lap tops & 2 wireless PS3's.

The installer was very knowledgeable & courteous.  I was a bit concerned after some of the posts at this forum.

The only glitch so far was the known issue with HDMI.  I can get sound into my AV Receiver & out to the speakers but I can't get the picture to the HDTV.  I would be happy to try any work around that anyone might suggest.

They are only suppose 3,000 feet. But im 3300 ft away and they let me keep it,. The reason why I want to think but know it is not that reason is because I kept bugging them to get it when it wasn't avaialble in my area and they don't want me to bug them even more.

by the way I have everything. 2 HD/2 SD, Voice, Internet, TV.

It was all working on component video & optical audio.  I was trying to get the HDMI to work after he left.

The one Issue that I have with HDMI is that I first need to power up the TV and select the correct input. I then need to re-boot the STB by holding in the on button until it flashes. This seems to then continue to work unless I lose power to the TV in which case I need to do it again.

Got the sammy up & running on HDMI will work on the Vizio tomorrow.  Was also able to load U-verse (Cisco) into my Harmony remotes with full functions.  Trick is to use the PVR device setting not the Set Top Box one.

Follow up:  Vizio is now connected by HDMI.  I did the both units on then pluged in the cable & it worked right away.

It all looks good so far & thanks to all who helped me out.

My receivers can take separate video & audio feeds for any output to the TV & speaker system.   Have HDMI running the picture to the TV & optical cable doing the sound system.  Cuts down on a bunch of heavy wire.

The answer to this question is technically 3500 ft. from the vrad. That is what the technical specs call for on the uverse limits, however that doesn't mean that there aren't exceptions in certain cases....

Just exactly what is a VRAD? I did a search and came up with a stock quote of  a company. I assume that if you aren't within a certain distance of a VRAD your service will not be satisfactory. How can I tell how far away it is from my house?

Thnaks,

The maximum distance you can be from a VRAD is 3500 feet to get service.  The tech would be able to tell you when he/she comes to your home.  The closer you are to the vrad the more likely you will be able to get the higher profile which would enable you to get 2hd streams and 2sd streams.  Instead of 1hd stream and 3 sd streams.

Again, thanks. I measured the distance and it is seven-tenths of a mile. This would be roughly 3700 feet. Since I would be on the fringe, if available at all, I will wait to see if AT&T can overcome this limitation with technology. As it stands now I have good reception with cable and my DSL is the best.

If it is not available just keep calling to check.  Also, ATT will announce here in the forum when it is launched in that area.

I'm the oddball that is exactly 3,720 feet from the VRAD and still have service. It's the 19/2 profile for 1 HD / 3 SD, and 12Mbs internet. My actual internet speed varies from 7-10.5Mbs.
