Series recording NEXT AIRING is an option?

What am I missing here?

Is there no option to have the DVR catch the next airing if there is either a conflict or a manual skip?

No matter what option I choose for single or series recordings (exact time, any day/any time, any day/time/once per day) when I want first run only, no show is recorded.

For example, let's say I want to record Project Runway on Thurs at 9pm but already have 4 shows recording at that time. The DVR should automatically search for the next airing (which usually shows at 10 or 11 or 12 right after the original.) It does not do this.

I assume I could change the settings to First Run and Reruns and it would capture the next airing. The problem with that is I end up with 10 tapings in one day on some occasions and my DVR gets filled in no time just from one series.

Any ideas? This is a major feature that needs attention.

You are asking a lot of a DVR, unfortunately.  I never had that kind of "smart" automation with my Comcast DVR, either.  I do believe that one of the DBS systems has some sort of a smart / conflict manager but that is a patented feature.  Supposedly, U-Verse is looking at more streams, so that may alleviate conflicts as an issue.

For the casual subscriber, I can see where my expectations are high. However, I've had DISH for the last 3 years and their HOPPER is AMAZING! I just posted a few comments on a reply in another post I started so I want rehash those.

But in summary, the DISH dvr does this and so much more. It not only automatically searches for the next airing of any recording you have set so it avoids conflicts, but it also indicates on every single show listing on the guides with some red/green/gray dots that the show is set to record. These colors indicate show is recording, series is recording, show is conflict but recording next airing, or show is a rerun and will not record. That last option (dots indicating the show is on my recordings list but the show is a rerun) is a GREAT feature not on Uverse. I find myself constantly double checking my recordings on Uverse because I see a show on the Guide grid that has no dot and I can't be sure Uverse has it on my list. usually, they do but it has no dot because it is a repeat. A gray or some other dot would be nice to reassure me that Uverse has the show in queue, but knows this is one I don't want because it is a repeat.

I could go on. The search function is abysmal with Uverse. From DIsh, you could search right from the grid or right from a recording. It would begin a search for a program name based on what you were viewing (clicking it on the guide or recording list or timer list).

Another awesome feature missing from Uverse is that your recordings do not show a history. On DISH, you could view schedule and it would not only show you what you have set for the next few days, but you could scroll back and see what just recording that day or days before as well as see the conflicts or programs skipped either manually or by the system due to conflicts or repeats.

I'm just baffled at how Uverse has so many features missing that a serious DVR usually just instinctively wants to have happen. Does ATT have no focus groups or consumer input test periods?

@poodlebuzz  Open cans o' worms much?  Bwahahaha!  If you want to know about Focus Groups at AT&T, look no further than theee same AT&T forums.  A few months ago, several of us were invited to preview a redesign of the forums.  The new look was universally panned with pleas to NOT go live.  They went live anyway, and basically ignored our input.  The new forums are dreadful.  At any rate, I have only seen surveys, so I do not know if Focus Groups are used - I doubt it.  Dish's Hopper has patented features which AT&T can't simply steal.  U-Verse could be getting a GUI (and maybe a DVR) upgrade as Ericsson recently bought Mediaroom, the platform that UV runs on.  The new look should be ready in a year or two.  Dish, Direct and TiVo have the best DVRs....
