Weekly Off Topic Thread 315

Well, you Uversers are such a bunch of slackers, I had to trudge all the way over here from DSL to start your WOTT for ya.Smiley LOL

Welcome to this weeks WOTT.

Got all my outside lights up finally, I think. I did find a few bare spots and had to go get a few hundred more lights, so I'm up to 3,940 lights now (pulling 286 watts). Got some of the stuff up indoors, but still have a three more boxes of ornaments and decorations to spread all over the house.

Temps for the last three or four days have been in the twenties dropping to the teens or even single digits at night. fortunately both the big winter blasters have spared us with the ice storm southeast of us and the blizzard northwest, but I'm sure we'll get ours sonn enough.

I'm ready though. I've got my generator all tuned up and ready to go with 50 gals of fuel in reserve, new belts on the snow blower and 200 lbs of salt. Bring it on ma nature.

Contintuing from the previous thread.

Oh......poor fellows.....   Right now...8:56 PM....it is 12 deg. here on the east side of Kansas City.

There's a difference, you expect to have those types of temps.  You are almost 500 miles further north.  We're typically in the 50s/upper 40s this time of year.

Oh I know that.  I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to give you static.

Actually the temp. last night (Fri.) dropped to 4.2 deg.  Now that is a teeth rattler.   Wish we had the money to get a little second home down south somewhere.  Normally the cold did not used to bother me.  Didn't like it but it did not make me miserable.  Now with my crazy mixed up respiratory system and sick lungs that cold air really feels icy....with every breath.  I dug out my big scarf this morning and wrapped it around my face.  That helped.

We could get a little snow again tonight.  But no major accumulation so far.

Hey, C.J.   When you get all done putting up the lights....take a photo and post it.  I'd enjoy seeing the results of all your work.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other peoples' money. .......Margaret Thatcher

Phil - you had mentioned Belieze in last week's WOTT.  Sounding better every day.  They speak English as that used to be British Honduras.  They have mountains, rain forests and such (and of course, beaches).  Chiang Mai and Pattaya in Thailand sound nice, too.

Snowed pretty good yesterday afternoon and evening. I was going to get some shots of the lights but the falling snow made the pictures too fuzzy, so I was going to get some this morning before dawn but during the "off" period between 12:30AM and 5:30AM I had a furry little critic come through and let me know that I had hung the lights too low next to the side walk.

Mr. Bunny must have bumped his ears on them so he decided to chew about a six inch section out so he could pass unobstructed. That also knocked out everything downstream from those lights.

The original plastic "light sticks" I had along the sidewalk suspended the string of lights about 7 or 8 inches off the ground so I went and got some 3/8 inch copper pipe and made some taller "light sticks" so the lights are suspended at ~18 inches. That should provide sufficient "ear clearance" and meet the federally mandated rabbit standards. Otherwise I'll just have to wait up and shoot his cotton tail off.

Maybe little Peter Cottontail will stay home tonight, they're calling for 2 degrees, youch.

Oh for heaven's sake....    Your mention of "cottontail" reminded me of an old Gene Autry song....

"Here comes Peter Cottontail......hopping down the bunny trail".....can't remember the rest of the lyrics.   Geez and old brain recalls crazy things.  But the wonderful Internet scores again:

Well, another bust for pictures of the lights. It was down to 1.9° by the time the lights came on yesterday evening, and I doubt my $99 digital camera's operational range is any lower than 20° so I decide I better not chance it.

It was negative 4.8° when I hit the sack at 1:30 this morning, but was back up to 3.9° above by 6:00 when I got up to feed the hounds.   Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Sunday's snow was only supposed to be 1 - 2 inches and we got almost 5. They're calling for another 3 tonight, so I'm wondering now whether we're gonna get 1/2 inch or a foot.

OH boy.  We got a little relief from the cold.....but tonight the thermometer is tumbling again.  10 PM and it is 8.4 deg. already.  So, unless warm air moves in, we could see very near 0 degrees by 5:30 or 6:00 AM.

Yes.....and the gas company is happy too.  When the outside temps start dropping to 30 deg. and below on a regular basis I switch our furnace off of the heat pump....over to gas.  The efficiency of the heat pump drops too low and the system will run and run trying to keep the house warm.  And...our house is only 10 years old and is heavily insulated plus all double pane windows.  Our furnace is new and carries a 95.5% efficiency rating when set on gas and it does not run very long at a time so a lot less electricity is used.  The electricity is expensive here.  Natural gas is cheaper by quite a bit.  Our bill is also affected by the fact that at our advanced age we tend to run things warmer than our sons and their families.  We set it at about 70 at night and 73 during the day.  But the thermostat is in the hallway so when it is 73 at that location is is actually about 72 out in the much larger space of the living room and kitchen areas.  Living room has a vaulted ceiling too.   I should probably run the ceiling fan on slowest speed to push the rising heat back down to floor level.  But I don't.

M.T......our middle son and his wife used to live in Lake Bluff, Illinois (some miles south of Milwaukee) and they were complaining about the cold.  But now they sold the place and have moved back to their home in Ocala, Florida.  I'm trying to weedle an invite for about a month visit out of them.
