Weekly Off Topic Thread #309

Time to start a new WOTT.

I believe summer is over....and even fall is on the ropes.  We had a low last night of 23.1 degrees.  A good hard freeze.  My wife went outside and picked the last of our tomatoes....even some green ones....last evening.  Yep.  New furnace is performing well.  We were cozy inside the house.

Forgot to take my 3 extra strength Excedrins this morning and I paid for it with good old Arthur Itis kicking me around all afternoon.  I won't forget that dose again soon.

Based on some recent articles I've read which attacked Windows Defender (Win 8's version of Internet Security Essentials)......I decided to try something else.  I installed another free, well-thought-of protection program called Avast.  I suspect you've all heard of it.  Well.  I've had problems ever since.  Computer slowing down.....even freezing and having to be rebooted to get back to normal.  This afternoon I abandoned the Avast experiment and went back to the Windows security program.  It never gave me any problems.  And...in fact....I've never been bothered by viruses or malware.  So I'm confident that it will continue to serve me well.  The charge has been made that Microsoft does not really take the security sevice and app very seriously.  I have no idea if that is true or not.  But I've gone back to what has worked for me over several years.

Re: Weekly Off Topic Thread #309

We've had temps in the high 40s/low 50s with overnight lows in the 30s, so fall has fell.  Last night, it was also quite windy and there were a number of local power outages, including me--from midnight to 7 this morning.  So of course, I lost TV, internet and VOIP.  One of these days, I've got to take the time to figure out what's up with my battery backup--it started beeping the moment the power went out, but no power to any devices. And the indicator for low battery doesn't light up.  It seems that if I lose power  to the whole house, then there can be no internet and hence no VOIP, so the value of the battery backup is questionable.  To be honest, I don't know off the top of my head just what the BBU is connected to.  But, my trusty cell phone got me through to the power company.  Maybe I should go back to POTS, but then my bundle pricing would probably be a goner.  Enjoy the weekend!

[ Edited ]

We cut the phone line for POTS a couple of years ago.  When we abandoned our full-time RVing lifestyle back in 2006 and settled here in the greater Kansas City area I insisted that my wife have her own cell phone to take with her at all times.  I did not want her to have a flat tire or car trouble when she was out alone on the streets and highways around this area without communication capability.  So...with both of us being equipped with our own phone and number.....and the fact that AT&T was charging us $30 per month for a phone that could only call free in our little town or the one just 4 miles down the road....we cut the umbilical.  Other advantage was the end of those irritating marketing calls.  We had that number registered on both the federal and state no-call lists but that had no effect on them.  Now we get a sales call only once in a very long time.....perhaps only 2 or 3 times a year....and just hang up on them.  So we rely entirely on our cell phones.

Oh boy!  Neighbor behind us....the one with the three noisy dogs....removed a big section of his fence today and in drove a big digger (or whatever they call them).   We suspect a new swimming pool.

They have two sons I believe.  So now I expect, come next summer, it will be party, party, party time around their pool every weekend.  Oh well.  Guess they're entitled.  Good to know he makes enough at his job to afford a pool.

My wife is a lifelong baseball fan.  I'm not.  Got invited to a pro game once.  Took a book to read.  Absolutely the most boring game I have ever witnessed.  So now we're watching the W.S.  I have no idea who is ahead at this point.  Don't give a toot.  But here we are nearly an hour past news time.  For an ex-journalist that is just not kosher.  Think I'll hit the sack.  She can watch the rest of the game....however much of it is left.  Yawn.......
