Weekly Off Topic Thread #304

Good morning all.  It's Friday, September 20, 2013.

I spent Thursday morning and early afternoon chasing from Best Buy to the AT&T store and back to Best Buy.   Grrrrrrr.   Well....it all worked out OK.   Something crazy went wrong with my wireless phone....my Motorola Atrix HD.  It was in my pocket Wednesday evening when all of a sudden I realized that it was getting hot.  I took it out and while it was not uncomfortable to hold....it was definitely hot and when I checked the battery charge level it was down to 35% and falling...as I watched.  The screen was not lit when I took it out of my pocket and it was not connected to any call.  Nor was there any apparent activity on the Wi-Fi link.   It was the same kind of "hot" that you might experience when the battery is being charged.  But....in this case it was not hooked up to any charger.   I ended up getting most help from an AT&T employee who was on duty in the Best Buy Store's wireless phone dept.  I came home and dug out my purchase receipt.  The phone is just 19 days short of being 1 year old.  So it is still under warranty......barely.    I called AT&T Customer Service as directed by that fellow in the BB store.  I was taken care of by a very nice, patient individual on the other end of the line and he immediately ordered a replacement phone which is coming by overnight postal service.  He told me that all the labels and materials will be included to pack up the old phone and ship it back to AT&T.    A strange thing about all this.  When I walked through the door into the AT&T store the phone instantly started behaving normally.  Thank goodness everyone believed my story.  And, to this moment, it is still nice and cool and holding its charge just like it is supposed to.   Crazy.   I was very pleased by the courtesy and concern shown me....and the quick way things have been handled.   If I had been caught out of warranty I would have had to purchase another phone.....under AT&T's early upgrade plan.....and the price quoted to me was $250.  I still have one year left on my contract.   If that had happened I would have just dug out one of my old phones....probably that crappy Samsung Solstice II that I retired when I got the Motorola....and reactivate it.  I sure as heck had not intention of parting with that much cash for a new phone.  I never wanted a smart-phone to begin with.  Oh well.....I guess all is well....and now I can continue to pay that extra $20 per month for data service that I have no use for but am forced to pay for just because I own a "smart" phone.  It's smart alright....it brings in an extra $240 per year to AT&T for a service that I don't use.

Sorry I ranted about this here.  Originally....a few hours ago....I wrote a post for the Wireless section of the forum and just as I was about to post it....."POOF"....it disappeared.  At that time I was too tired and ticked off to rewrite the whole thing.  Now I've had supper and a nap so I'm in a better mood.  Wonder where that lost post is.....perhaps just drifting here and there through the ether?

Good morning Phil.  I had a similar experience with my Motorola RAZR M.  It seemed to happen after an update was pushed out. I couldn't hold a charge more than about 6 hours. I called Verizon, they walked through about 2 minutes of "troubleshooting" and sent me a new phone.  No hassle.

We're getting some glorious rain in DFW right now. Been raining since yesterday evening. Rain gauge in my yard shows almost an inch.  Would be nice if it would rain like this for a few more days, but it's supposed to clear up by this evening.  Weather is saying that some areas have gotten as much as 4".

Dog gone OU.  We are still waiting for the pricless rain.  They say 100% chance.  I'll believe it when I see it.

I still say I need to change jobs and become a weather man.  They can be wrong 95% of the time and still make good money.  Most people would be fired at that rate!!

So BeeBee, did you get your rain?  When it was all said and done we wound up with almost 3".  Of course it's not really enough as the lakes are all still way down, but every little bit helps.

All totaled 1/2 inch.Smiley Mad  They were forcasting 3 to 4 inches, and some areas in SA, up to 6 inches.  They blew the forcast again.

We have a lake here called Medina Lake and it's almost dry.  Here is a link to images on Google:  https://www.google.com/search?q=medina+lake+drought+pictures&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:IE-SearchBox&tb...

Some ranchers are using what was the lake for their cattle to graze on the grass that is now growing.

My parents live in the Fredericksburg area and said they received 4 inches so that's good.

Over the last week or so we have received a total of about 2 1/2 inches of rain.  The tomato plants just sucked it up like crazy.  The result was some of our nearly-ripe tomatoes developed splits in their skin.  Oh well....it usually heals over fairly quickly.  My wife picked them an brought them inside to keep them away from bugs.  It's been a crazy year for our little tomato garden.  4 plants.....have produced like maniacs.  We've had more tomatoes this year than I can remember ever having.  Those 4 plants have produced at least 200 tomatoes.  We've eaten all we want and I've taken quite a few to our nearest neighbors.  The last time I can remember anything like this year's crop.....I was a teenager.  We had one volunteer plant that came up out in our backyard and that plant also went crazy.  When the first freeze was forecast my aunt went out and picked all the remaining tomatoes.....partially ripe and green ones.....wrapped the green ones in newspaper and stored them on a shelf in the basement.   Believe it or not we had the last tomatoes off that volunteer plant at our Christmas dinner that year.

Temperatures have moderated quite a bit in these parts.  It's 55 deg. right now....9:45 PM.  Nice to get away from that heat.  BUT....I find myself wondering how my sickly lungs will handle extremely cold air when we start seeing it drop into the 20's and teens.  Hmmmmmm.  Wonder if #2 son and wife would like a couple of guests in their Florida home around mid-winter.Smiley Very Happy

Since our travel plans got totally wiped out this past summer because of all my medical problems....we're tentatively planning a shorter trip for next month.....perhaps down to Arlington, TX to visit long-time friends and maybe on down to Austin for a visit to our oldest grandson and see our one and only great grandchild.  She's 9 yrs. old now and we have not seen her since she was about 5 yrs. old.  May not remember us.  That is the sort of thing that happens when the modern-day families get scattered all over the country.  In our case we have grandchildren here in the Kansas City area.....in Texas.....in Connecticut....and in Wyoming.  It's really difficult to keep in touch with all of them.....let alone have a chance to actually spend any time with them.

I'm looking forward to having a chance to put my new zoom lens, that I bought last May, to use and put it to a real workout.  The challenge of a trip like this is my need for oxygen.  I believe I will try taking my concentrator and the accessory tank-filling pump along with us in the car.  It is possible to schedule oxygen drop-offs with the company that supplies my needs but that requires advance planning.  My wife and I have never been much for advance planning on our travels.  We have always tended to wing it....as the mood dictates.  So setting up a schedule for oxygen deliveries along the way would be a real pain in the derriere.

Have any of you folks ever tried checking your Internet speed with the "TestMy.net" app?  It is kind of different.  I ran it and my download speed was just over 19 mbps even though we pay for the 18 mbps service.  The upload speed was about 1.48 mbps so that is what I usually see.  I just checked again and the down speed was about 17.2 mbps.

Hope you all have a great week. I think it's going to be a rather quiet one around here.

Phil there is another thread here where people are seeing the same as you on the internet speeds.  I am seeing 21/1.5 and I'm also in Max 18.  I was getting a constant 17.2 to .3 down and 1.3 to .4 up.

I appears everyone got somewhat of a bump in speed.

Beautiful morning here.  61 degrees, clear skies and sunny.  I have the windows open and enjoying "airing out the house".  Been closed up since April/May time frame because of the heat!!  I swear it's not good for anyones health for our houses to be closed up that long, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, everyone enjoy the rest of the weekend!!

Oh I agree with you on the fresh air being nice to have inside the house.  Our problem is a neighbor behind us with three very noisy dogs who bark at anything that moves.  Also....on Friday, and sometimes Saturday, nights we can enjoy the sound of dirt track race cars about a mile from our house.  The real estate agent seemed to have forgotten to mention the existence of that blasted race track.  Even with all of our double paned windows all closed tightly we find that the noise of those engines can interfere with both conversation and hearing the TV audio.   We just have to forget using our patio on the north side of our house on those nights.  The track is about a mile north of us....as the crow flies.

That's too bad about the race track being almost in your back yard.  I can see where that would be an issue.  Do they only race weekends?  Friday/Saturday?  I see you already metioned that.

I had an issue with the dog barking thing for several years.....well about 10.  My neighbor directly behind me had two pit bulls.  I could not even enjoy BBQ'ing after dark.  All they did was bark the whole time.  I ended up trying to make "friends" with them.  If I would cook ribs I would throw a couple of bones over the fence when we were done.  Seemed to work as they finally figured out if I was cooking they were getting some leftover scraps.  The worst thing was he had each one chained up to a tree in his yard.  Each chain was about 8 to 10ft.  Their whole life was spent that way.  They never let them off the chain to run around.  Finally one of them was able to get off the chain and get thru the fence of the neighbor next door to them (also behind me) and he was outside with his granddaughter.  He called the cops who in turn called animal control and they came and took them since they were in such bad shape after they looked at the chains and yard they were in.

The rest of the neighbors, who are responsible dog owners, take there dogs inside at least at night.  Most are like me and the dog just goes outside if their outside or of course for potty breaks.

That's a shame about those dogs. No animal deserves to be treated like that. Little Elm has a city ordinance about chaining animals, not allowed, period, end of discussions.

I wish San Antonio did.  It's all too common here.  Most are pitbulls and they have BIG chains around their neck and then to a tree.  Chains like you would pull a car with or something.  Makes me so mad.

Morning, everyone! I just thought I'd pop over here to see what your weekly Off Topic was about. Smiley Happy

Talking about dogs, I'm trying to get the husband to fence in part of our yard so we can let our little Silky Terrier out when she needs to go, without being on a leash...and also to run around and barrk at whatever she wants to bark at...(she thinks that she's bigger than she actually is). Smiley Tongue

It's ok, for now, that the weather is still pretty nice but I know that I'M not going to like taking her out in the Winter. Lol! It seems she ALWAYS picks me to do the dirty work. Lol!

Geez, in my neighborhood, I'm afraid to even stake her out in the yard, let alone would never put her on a chain tie to a tree, afraid that someone might take her, so she is always with one of us, USUALLY ME, when she needs to go out.

We also have a few tomato plants that need the green ones picked from...and there are a LOT. We've gotten more tomatoes this year than I can remember. I read Phil's post about wrapping them in paper...my mom does the same...wraps them in paper and puts them in a box. We'll be eating tomatoes til next year!! Lol!

Hope you all have a good day...it's time for me to get ready for work....but do I have to??? Smiley Indifferent

I finally convinced my better half to put in a fence for the dogs. It's been so nice, except when one of the kids doesn't shut the gate all the way. I don't have to stand there watching the dogs the whole time they're outside and they've gotten a whole lot more fresh air that way. Not sure how well this will go over with them once winter hits but with three dogs and one a pit that likes to run, it's been a reprieve. I didn't shut the gate all the way this past week and didn't even realize they were missing until a stranger to the dogs(not us) brought the last of them home. The pit, of course. If Jill had known Izzy's name, then she would've jumped right in the car for her.
