Weekly Off Topic Thread #302

Holy cow!  It's past time already to start this WOTT.  OK.  I'll volunteer.

Not much news from my corner.  Except that today...Sunday....8th day of September....was the hottest day of the summer.  We had a high reading of 104.7 degrees in the shade on the north side of our house.  That occurred around mid-afternoon.  Even now, at nearly 8:10 PM it is 84.5 deg. outside.   We live in a small suburb about 20 miles east of Kansas City, Missouri.  It has been a long time since I've seen temps this high so late in the summer.  We're only two or three weeks away from first day of fall...for crying out loud.

Our Chiefs managed to beat the hapless Jaguars this afternoon.  Now we're watching the Cowboys and the Giants.  Kind of a sloppy game but for now Dallas is ahead by 3 points.  If the Chiefs had been playing here in Kansas City it would have been health threatening for both team members and the fans in this heat.

Well....y'all have a wonderful week and stay cool.

Wow.  Thankfully, I don't think the mercury made it up to 100 this year.  The rain gauges have been quite a bit higher, though.  Lakes that haven't seen full pool in 15 years had to have the emergency flood gates opened.

Would you please....please send some of that wetness our way?  After a very wet spring.....we're back in drought conditions again.  Only now the temps are higher than they were last year at the same time.  Of course it lasted a much longer period of time last year.

On a rather unpleasant subject...    For reason that most of you are aware of, my wife and I have been looking seriously into the costs of funerals and burials and/or cremation.  I won't take this any further except to warn you that....if  you wait too long...you are in for a huge surprise.  Some folks we know purchased preplanned services years ago.  We wish we had done so.  This is one situation where the KISS principle REALLY is recommended.

While the subject is a bit grim, it is a necessity.  I have been hesitant on prepaid funeral/cremation services in the unlikely but possible event that the funeral home would go out of business prior to my demise.  Maybe that's overthinking it.  Another item I learned is that in many areas (check the local laws), enbalming is not required prior to cremation, thus saving the cost.  Further, one can choose to be cremated in a cardboard container rather than a casket. Of course, once I'm gone, I won't be too worried about it anymore!

Funeral homes are a tricky lot!  My Grandma (dad's mom) had pre-paid for a funeral but after her death, they said that she didn't.  A banker in her town knew what the Funeral director had done.  When my future Mother-in-law passed, the Funeral home had marked everything up by 20%, even though the contract said that the fees were frozen.  I wrote a letter and got $1000 back for the estate.

I kind of wish that Walmart, Sears and so on, offered Funeral services as there would have to be more openess and transparency.

My father was a member of the Illinois cremation society ( http://www.cremation-society.com/index.shtml ). I think he paid $300 about 30 years ago. When he passed about 10 years ago, they took care of the cremation at a local funeral home, and because he was a veteran he got a free spot (services included) at the Lincoln National Cemetery here in Illinois.

My brother, on the other hand, who died (6 months after my father) in Fort Meyers, FL, received a "pauper's" cremation courtesy of Lee County and is currently interred in a box on a shelf in my office. He loved to fish, so one of these days the plan is to get a charter out on Lake Michigan and cut him loose.

The wife and I have yet to make any arrangements.

Spoiler
Of course they may yet find me buried in the back yard.Smiley LOL

I have it in my will I am to be creamated and my ashes scattered out to sea.  When my dad died suddenly in 2004 he was creamated and my mom came out to visit me in Hawaii and we had his ashes scattered near the shark dive spot since he was looking forward to me going back to Hawaii so he could come diving again.  He was an avid SCUBA diver. I'm not sure if I want mine scattered from a submarine or just a beach somewhere.

Hey!   I love that submarine idea.  Right out the torpedo tube......POOF!Smiley Very Happy

Well....yeah it is grim to consider.  But a necessity.  Here in Missouri all prepaid monies go into a state controlled fund.  That law was set up after so many cases of crooked funeral homes were occurring.  We've talked to two outfits.....both long time family owned establishments.  Let me just say....they do NOT all charge the same prices.  So I recommend shopping around.

On a more positive note:   I saw this idea which I'd love to have in my home.  What a selling point it would be for a house.

Cheers!!!

Clinton Missouri is where the crooked funeral was for my grandmother.

Last week was started on Thurs. the 5th, so are we doing these other than Fri. now?

(from my WOTT to be deleted, not sure why #302 didn't show as not read for me)

Happy Friday the 13th, y'all...for those who are superstitious. Smiley Wink

I'm stuck at some friends' home this month (caretaker/petsitting), and they forgot to give me the new wi-fi password!   They're enjoying a trip to Europe.  Can't get much done on the phone as I run of data.  Smiley Sad  A McDs is nearby, though.

Hope all is well with everyone.
