OK.....late again.  My middle name is "late".   Where's dave when we need him?

It's FRIDAY.   Let's see.....3 days and 3 doctors....     Today....was the ear, nose and throat specialist who checked to see why I'm so hoarse all the time.   Good news there....no sign of any nodules or cancer tissue on my vocal chords.   Next week I go back to the lung specialist for tests to see how much air volume I've lost in my lungs.  And so forth and so forth....ad infinitum.

Really gorgeous day here today.   High temp. of about 77.....under partly cloudy skies with sun breaking through the clouds quite a lot.  A shutterbug's day.

Big wreck on I-70 in Kansas City.  Tanker truck crashed and exploded.  I-70 interstate has been close most of the day.  Don't know details.  There are a ton of commuters having to find alternate routes home this evening.

I took the bait....and bought my new Tamron 18mm through 270mm zoom lens for my Canon XSi DSLR.   I tried to purchase it from two different camera shops in Kansas City....one of which is a K.C. institution....but neither shop had it in stock.  It was ordered I was told.  I waited.  I waited.  Then I gave up and ordered it on line....and it was shipped to me for free....at my front door in 3 days. (I ordered on a Sat.)   It works great.....better than even the more positive reviewers reported.  Now no more having to stop in the middle of everything to switch lenses.  The whole zoom range is in the one lens.  There are compromises to be expected with this type of lens....of course.  But Tamron has reduced most potential problems to near insignificance....for us average hobbiest photographers.  Now I want to head out and put it to good use.

These two images give an idea of the range of this one lens.  Both taken from exactly the same physical spot.  #1 is wide angle.  Note the house way in the background, slightly to the right.   #2 is on the 270mm setting on the lens.  This is back of that same house.  Because the digial sensor in the Canon Rebel XSi DSLR is smaller than "full-frame" the resulting crop means (in the Canon) you multiply the focal length of the lens by 1.61.  The resulting effective telephoto image is equivalent to a 434+ mm lens.   There are full-frame (approx. same size as the old 35mm film frame) digital cameras commonly available.....IF you can afford them.  Mostly pros do use them because they need as much quality in their images as possible when they go to blow them up to huge sizes....not to mention that their livelyhood depends on the quality they deliver.  But for me.....I think this Tamron super-zoom is going to do just fine.

Keep in mind that by the time I compressed these files down to the point where the forum would accept them......the image sharpness does get reduced.  I hate compression.  That why I shoot everything in RAW format and, even after editing I save in .tif format which does not compress like .jpg does....so image quality is not sacrificed.  Once you save an image file in .jpg format.....you can never recover the original quality....unless you had the foresight to change the file name very slightly (add A, B or C to the name) so that the original does not get destroyed by the save.

Well....gratefully....they have free Internet here in the hospital.  Yep....here I am.  Warning.....don't go to an ER unless you really mean it.

Had a spell.....fluid collecting in my lungs.....running a fever.....hardly make it from the bedroom to our bathroom without passing out.  So I had my wife drive me to the ER at our local hospital.  Now I'm incarcerated in a room....tests today...tests tomorrow.....then, hopefully I can go home.

I get bored.  So I took a walk down the hall.  Got promptly cornered by a nurse and told to get back to bed and get my oxygen feed back into my nose.   So, like a good boy,  I did.   Now I have so much stuff wired or connected to me with tubes....I couldn't get out of bed if I wanted to.

Phil,

Get better and take care of yourself. Heading into the hospital ER was the best thing for you to do, even if you are 'locked up' now. It's much better than the alternative.

That's a bummer Phil, but great your wife made you go to the ER.  Ask for an oxygen bottle on a little hand cart so you can get moving, probably the best thing for you.  Might not've gotten enough since you lost Alfie. Smiley Wink

Thanks to you all....you are my support.    I got a good laugh......we are assigned an RN and at least one practical nurse or nurses assistant for each shift.  It's on a patient by patient bases and one of them revealed (jokingly) that I'm the "short straw" patient when they draw for assignments.  Made me feel good and gave me a smile.  I know I'm doing my job.  Hee,hee.

Free Internet service.  Just for chuckles I ran the SpeedTest and .....how does 1 mbps or less sound to ya?    Actually I'm surprised that downloaded stuff comes as fast as it does.

My lung specialist showed up today and took control away from the hospital's doctor.  No gunfire was exchanged.   So now my medications look normal to me and tests ordered are beginning to sound like they are relative to my problems....not just shots in the dark.  I'm feeling more confident....and, frankly, less frightened and upset.  The result is that I'm feeling better.  But still having problems keeping the blood-O2 above 90%.

Hopefully....by tomorrow afternoon I'll be home.  In the morning I will perform some tests to demonstrated that I need oxygen in my home and available to me full time.  I will exercise without oxygen supplied and if my blood oxygen content falls below 88%....Medicare will approve it and pay the bill.  If not....we'd have to pick up the charge and that could be more than we could handle.  Never wanted to flunk a test so badly in my life.Smiley Very Happy

WOW....the new Yahoo/AT&T mail screen went into effect on our computers today.   As you might guess.....it is a real mess.   Much worse than what we had.   When I now bring up the contact list to pick addresses to put in a message.....the revised list is in alphabetical order by first name.......NOT last name as I had it originally.   This was change YAHOO did.  I was not given a choice and had nothing to do with it.   Make absolutely no sense.  Then on the right side of the screen are awful cartoon stationaries which are not cute, funny, or anything else.  Just a darn nuisance.  I've tried to find a way to get it blanked out permanently but ohhhh Nooooo....it just keeps coming back.

I'm positive these crazy design mistakes will continue to pop up.

I would give up and just switch permanently to Windows Live Mail which is working well.....unless Yahoo decides to mess that up also....as they have in the past.  BUT....then I'd still have to keep the Yahoo/ATT app or system....so my wife's Apple stuff would pick it up.....I think.  At this moment I'm too tired to really care much.

Oh oh.....thought I had the room to myself tonight.  11:15 PM and here comes a room mate.  That means lots of activity and no sleep.  It'll be busy, busy the rest of the night.  Well....not his fault.

We're only on WOTT 289?  Seems it should be way higher than that Smiley Happy

It's interesting that the first time I come here in awhile that the WOTT opens with talk of DSLRs and the like.  I've had my D3100 (also an APS-C sensor instead of full-frame) now for a few years and just now am really getting into photography as a hobby (people at work say I need to do something other than work on my time off...Can you imagine that?).  Just bought me an 8mm fisheye lens on Amazon (Rokinon FE8M-N) which will be here tomorrow so I can do some really wide-angle shots.  I bought an intervalometer earlier in the week and did my first time-lapse with the 18-55mm kit lense that came with the camera, video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9qDFGx0FoQ&hd=1.  The video consists of 777 shots at 10 second intervals ran at 24 fps so it comes out to about 32 seconds in the video covering almost a whole two hours real-time.  My fully-charged camera battery was the limiting factor, here.  Also bought an AC adaptor for my camera which will be here tomorrow as well.  It's great that I can mix two of my hobbies -- weather and photography.  It turned out great for my first go around, I think, but for some reason LR did some funky things when it assembled the "slideshow".  I tried PS and Premier Pro but LR seemed to do the best job at compiling the shots into a 24 fps video, even if there were some hiccups with the video looking like the tripod took a nose dive for a few frames (I think the crop action that I did to get the images down to a 16:9 AR didn't get "synced" between all photos and missed a few frames).

Lots of thunderstorms rolling through lately, just had a big one pass us to the North but it was way too windy for me to keep the tripod steady so had to give up for the night.  I've posted a shot that I took from our last storm, and I hear you...Had to really compress it for the forum but I only do RAW normally in all shooting and editing but since PS doesn't like Nikon's NEF RAW file format I have to run it through Adobe's DNG converter first but the payoff is an amazingly sharp, crisp image assuming all went well with the actual shot (focus, etc).  Been doing a lot of night photography with long exposure times, have a coworker who is going to take me up on the Bighorn mountains sometime in his rock-crawler Jeep this summer so I can do some really nice timelapse shots of the night sky with 0 light pollution...Can't wait for that.  My next project/big purchase to fuel my new hobby is going to be to get either a really good "zoom" lense like Phil or a telescope with a mount for my camera so I can do some true astrophotography...Not real sure yet.

My dad is going to be coming up from CA sometime this month to help me put in a sprinkler system so I can finally plant some grass.  Been in my house for over a year and still haven't gotten that done yet (thankfully no HOA here, though I'm sure the neighbors will appreciate a real "lawn" outside of my house instead of dirt).  Bought an IrrigationCaddy sprinkler timer/controller so it can be controlled from anywhere (they have Android and iOS apps, too).  I plugged it in and am quite impressed with the UI, we'll have to see how well it performs driving the solenoids on the valves once we get it in.  In particular, I'm glad it has a "Master Valve" port so it can drive a relay to turn on my irrigation well pump.

Sounds like you've had a very busy week there, Phil...Hopefully things get better for you!
