Yep, Dave. Happy birthday to both you and your wife.  The week of tragedy about over.  I'll make it.   I told my wife I think it's time for a trip.  We have not taken a road trip in a long time.   I have been wanting to head back out to Utah.  It's been many years since we traveled the roads of that gorgeous state.  Being a photographer.....I salivate at the thought of all those wonderful landscapes just waiting for Shutterbug Phil to come for a visit.  Just got to get through this Memorial Day weekend.  Big family get together tomorrow.  My wife's side of the family.  We may get rained on.  But we'll be in a city park shelter so we should not be any more than just damp.  It's just an annual get together of my wife, her two sisters and their brother....along with all family and offspring that can make it.  Fun and a great way to stay in touch.

Then.....on Monday....we must put in an appearance at a big graduation reception for our grandson and three of his buddies.  It seems that these grad. receptions are the latest fad.  Lots of work and cost for parents.  Never had that sort of thing when I graduated from high school.  Heck, our goal was simple......take our girls out for partying and dinner after the graduation ceremony.....stay out all night and have breakfast together the next morning at one of the guys homes.   Well....as I remember it......about 6 of us went out together.....ran out of steam around 1:00 AM.....took the girls home.....and headed home ourselves.  My folks were truly surprised....and wondered what went wrong.   Geez....we just got too darn sleepy to have any more fun.

After that......the spring activities should be pretty much over.

We finally got our tomato plants in the ground and the cages up and staked.  The wife put a couple of grape-tomato plants in big planters and that's all we're gonna do in the way of gardening this year.  At least we don't seem to have a drought to cope with this summer so far.  It's been a cool, wet spring and everything is growing and blooming like crazy.  Our iris plants....roses....flowering bushes....are all taking off big time.  Drives a camera nut crazy.

I've not been doing my duties over on the advice segments of the forum.  So many of the problems these days are beyond my pay level.   I do count myself fortunate that the tech who visited our home a few months ago made the corrections he did.   He moved our DVR back to the computer room....located about 5 feet from the RG.  Then he put that non-DVR STB in the living room.  My NetGear dual band router is in the living room also.....plugged into the network port on the back of the STB.  Now that we are all windows 8 and/or iOS.....setting up the home network was mind blowingly simple.  Win 8 just did it automatically when I asked it to.  Everything works great, including the printer, which is completely functional for printing or scanning from all the various other devices.  Error levels displayed in UVRT are the lowest they have ever been.  Not perfect but still much more than acceptable.   I suppose now the whole thing will fall apart.  Huh?   Should have crossed my fingers before I bragged.

Well....wanted some showers today.  Didn't get them.  Now it's 85 degrees....and a bit humid.  Makes breathing a bit more difficult.  Had second CT scan of lungs this morning.  Next week the doctor will look at them and compare with first scan taken about 1 1/2 years ago to see if things are stable or if the scarring is getting worse.  I hope for the best.....expect the worse.

Y'all have a great weekend.  Remember those passed loved-ones and the wonderful heros who have made the ultimate sacrifice for us and our country.  Say a few prayers......and enjoy a relaxed, fun time with your families.   God Bless.

Phil

Re: WOTT #287

Finally gave up my POTS phone service last week, went w/Basic Talk not Uvoice as it'd be about similar to the $34 I was paying for POTS.

Basic Talk is $9.99/mo, for me $11.37 w/taxes and fees.  Call waiting, caller ID, voicemail, local + long distance and other features included.  This is not a teaser rate like Vonage.

Call quality sounds exactly like the POTS did, very good, but is $23 per month cheaper.

I am looking at a backup battery for this, but there haven't been as many power outages here.  Detroit Edison said they were trying after that July 4th weekend outage (til Tuesday) a few years, to improve the system in my neighborhood.

ATT actually stopped billing 5/21, the day it was transferred and getting $34 back from ATT. Smiley Very Happy

Phil: Things will get easier.  It takes time.  Your pain reminded me of having to put Mandy down a few years ago.  I'm sure glad that we found Gizmo (or he found us) and I'm glad that Alfie brought those years of joy to you.

I saw in your other post that you are thinking of upgrading your DSLR.  I still have a weak Digital point and shoot camera but have been eyeing DSLR-Like cameras, point and shooters with big lenses.  I also want a multi-band amateur radio transceiver but after replacing two projection TV's with new big, flat screens, one BR player, sound bar and two Sauder cabinets, our resources have been depleted, lol.  EDIT: Just got my Furlough Notice.  Thanks to Sequestration, I could lose 11 days of pay (one day/week) from early July to September 30th. Wow Dave.  That's a blow.   And I just read last night that federal government agencies are hiring like crazy.  Hmmmmmm.

I went camera shopping today.  My Canon XSi DSLR was new in May of 2009.  And the technology has advanced to quickly and improvements in the on-board processors have been so drastic that I thought I'd like to get a new Canon.  Even considered one particular model of Nikon but after looking at the D5200 I have pretty muched eliminated it from consideration.  Wrong feature set for me.
But the big difference between the DSLR's made in the last decade and the new ones is the addition of all this video capability stuff.  None of which do I want.  I'm a still photographer and I resent having to pay for all that extra junk that I'll never use.  Yes.....higher end Canons are available that do not include this video capability.  They are the semi-pro and professional versions.  But I don't have $2500 to $5000 to spend on a camera.   So I walked away today.  I'm still closely examining the Tamron wide range zoom lens.....18mm to 270mm.....which has received very high ratings from the reviewers and test labs.  It currently has come down in price rather drastically and can be had for $485.  For a traveling photographer like me it would be very, very convenient.  Effectively doing away with having to change lenses.  I currently have the Canon 18mm - 55mm and the 55mm - 255mm zooms.  But that means I have to carry both of them and quite often find myself changing lenses out in the back country or famous American historic sites in order to get just the right crop.  With the Tamron.....that inconvenience would be eliminated.  There are several independent lens makers who crank out zooms of this type but the Tamron has received the best reports and seems to have the least distortions.....always a problem with these super-zooms.

But for now....a new camera is out of the question.  My old one and its images look better and better all the time.

Yep, Chris.  We cut that home phone umbilical a couple of years ago.  Do not have a phone in the house other than our two cell phones...his & hers.  It is wonderful to be free of all those extremely annoying marketing calls.   Doesn't do any good to put the number on the state and federal no-call list.  They pretty much ignore it.  If I would ask too many questions they would just disconnect.

I'm a bit turned off by video too BUT I'd be surprised how much extra (if any at all) that you are paying for that feature - as most Digital sensors can capture still and video, without any modifications.  I will say that I used my 5 year old Samsung 6mp point and shoot as a video recorder for our Granddaughter's play and that $80 primarily still camera used a video cam, was almost as good as a $175 camcorder.  So, in a pinch a still cam as a video cam can be used in a pinch.

Yeah.  If I fess up....I've been doing the same thing with my little Panasonic Lumix pocket camera.  The end of the year of one of my grandsons' graduation yr.  has been super active.  I recorded several jazz band concerts and his senior recital.  I burn the video files to DVD's and give them to him which he likes to have.  Poor little camera gets kind of hot after several minutes of recording.  I think my instructions say something somewhere about not recording too long at one time....but I don't remember for sure.  Maybe I should read them more closely.

Got bad news from doctor today.  Lung fibrosis is worse.  So now he's refering me to a Pulmonologist. (sp?)

Had .8 inches of rain last night and another 1.3 inches today.  Poor tomato plants.  Hope they don't drown.  Flash flooding is threatening.  More storms tonight and off and on the rest of the week are in the forecast.   And to think.....last year we were in the middle of a severe drought.

We've had good rains but ya know 1) we have areas in our yard that never came back and 2) the ground cracks just after 3-4 days of dry weather.  Must still be very dry, at all levels.
