Ah yes.....all that hype. Yet, here we still are and December 21, 2012 is nearly over. In fact....it IS over in some time zones.
This morning I wasted several hours in my ongoing battle with Apple and its iOS 6 operating system. My wife's iPad 3 has never worked right since she upgraded (I'm tempted to say downgraded) from iOS 5 to iOS 6. Slow, slow, slow. Sometimes she just gives up waiting for things to download and appear on the screen. The News Corp news service called "The Daily" had become the hardest to deal with but that is no longer a problem because it has been discontinued. But things kept gradually slowing down. Finally, after weeks of struggle, it just pretty much came to a halt this morning. So she allowed me to take over to try, once again, to fix things. Well......I did try everthing I dared. Even did a "reset" followed by reboot. Nothing helped. Some of the built-in apps....like E-mail....had complete frozen. I could access our E-mail through the Safari browser but no longer through the E-mail app. So I folded and called Apple support. While her unit is still undeer warranty....the 90 day free phone support service has long expired. But he listened to the problems....and what I had done. Then he took a few moments to get a waiver so he could help us for no cost. That was nice. He took me step by step through an entire restoration of the operating system. Because they were positive it had been corrupted somehow. Just how.....we have no idea. She is not one to wander all over the Web like some folks do. Anyway we had to plug it into my laptop....perform a sync followed by a back up from the iPad to iTunes. Then we performed the OS restoration also through iTunes. That took 15 minutes to download and then at least another 15 to 20 minutes to install. Then I had to restore her apps. That was easy EXCEPT....they all had to be reactivated and that required passwords....etc. Thank goodness we have documented almost all of the passwords we use. But it took time. I think I was on the phone with the Apple fellow for about 1 1/2 hours and then it was a couple of hours more getting the apps working again. BUT the good new is that everything seems to be working fine and it seems to be performing tasks at fairly fast pace. Got the E-mail app back working again. And a couple of other functions that had completely stopped working are now OK. Will it last? Who knows. Forgive me but I really doubt it. But that's because of my incurable disklike for anything Apple. So far her iPhone has not displayed any of the problems we have had with the iPad.
For a while the CS guy thought it might be a hardware problem. If that had been the case we would have had to make an appointment at the nearest Apple store and then drive 80 miles round trip to take it there. Thankfully that apparently was not the case.
I wanted to restore it to iOS 5 but he told me that is not possible. I doubt that but can't prove it. I think....more likely....it is just not permitted.

UPDATE on the iPad 3, iOS 6 problem.
My fears were well founded. The complete restoration of the OS did not help much. A few problems were corrected.....but the main irritation....the slow, slow downloads and outright freezing of videos within news stories on the major news sites was NOT helped at all. I had given up and we made an appointment for Monday morning at the Apple Store which is about 40 miles away because the CS guy felt we might have a hardware problem. (Heh. I'll say) THEN....in one of those moments of insight (that come very rarely at my age) I remembered something I had read quite a while ago about iPads having problems with the 5 gHz Wi-Fi band. Those of you who know me may remember that heavy congestion on the 2.4 gHz band in our neighborhood forced us to move to the higher frequency. Everything was going so well until my wife upgraded to iOS 6.
Late this morning I switched her iPad back to the 2.4 gHz band and BINGO! Everything immediately started working right. It was amazing. But, of course, she would still have to cope with peak usage periods when everyone in the neighborhood is coming home from work and downloading their E-mail. So next I connected her unit to the 5 gHz band signal coming from our dual band router way back in the computer room. The signal was weaker by everything worked just fine. You see....because the router has about 5 walls between itself and the location of her recliner....the signal is a little weak on the high band. I had purchased an extender and located it in our living room. It worked just fine with all our gear....EXCEPT her iPad.....beginning with the upgrade to iOS 6. I don't know what Apple did in that new OS but it sure screwed things up and because she was so upset for the last couple of months it has made me miserable.
SO....now she is back on 5 gHz but it's the signal coming from the router in the computer room. All is well...for now. I'll let one of our geniuses figure out exactly what's going on here but my trial-and-error experimentation seems to have resulted in a solution..
WHEW!!!! I've spent literally hours on that blasted iPad. Makes me really appreciate my trouble-free Windows 7 Dell laptop which has given me several years of faithful service.
OH yes. I forgot to mention. The female CS tech I talked to this morning at Apple admitted to me that the iPad has a problem with the 5 gHz Wi-Fi service and that they have had lots of complaints about it.

Many of you know that I love Ustream.TV for live cameras all over the world. I have never seen elephants visiting Pete's Pond in Botswana but tonight I saw these Impalas. Nice! Later, two warthogs visited.

One of the wonders of the web, Dave. It can take us so many great places in the world where we will never be able to travel.
Yesterday.....having a conversation with my grandson about our difficulties with iPad and 5 gHz Wi-Fi. "Hmmmmm", he commented. "I have had exactly the same problem with my Mac laptop". What a surprise.
Today's frustration: Struggling to help my brother-in-law with his effort to print out certain parts of his digital copy of GM's Service manual for his 2005 Buick Park Avenue.....I had my first exposure to the VMware Player program. Holy cow! Now my brain hurts. I've never had the opportunity to attempt moving files from a virtual system to a real-life system. Can't print from VMware but you can convert a document to PDF and the you have to move it to your PC's desktop and print it from there. I enjoy trouble shooting. But NOT when my result is NOT successful. Where's that aspirin bottle?
