Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

Another "cool" front blew through Indy last night with a reinforcing short of cool air.  Lots of wind and temps today in the 60's.  Maybe some light frost tomorrow.  We are still way down in the rainfall department but we got half an inch Wed. afternoon and that was as much as we received in all of August!

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

SKP, the unusual weather events I've seen are the "Northern Lights" being visible at Lake Erie and a 100' water spout coming ashore at Cape Hatteras. Know I've mentioned these before.

Beautiful here today too. Sunny and mid-60's although the 20mph winds are hard to take. But the sun w/wind are drying things up real quick which is what we need.

Spring flower vegetation is popping up real quick with all the rain we've had. Daffodil leaves are about 8" tall and 5"-6" for the Belladonna Lilies. Daffodils will bloom in a couple weeks and there's hundreds of them in the woods here. The "Lily" mentioned, which belongs to the Amaryllis family, won't bloom until early/mid summer. The vegetation of both of these flower species is deer resistant and poisonous. Probably the only reason there's so many around here.

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

Most of the snow we got has melted over the last couple of days.  Temps in the 40s and the T shirts and shorts are showing up in many places.  Later next week temps are supposed to be in the 50s.Smiley Very Happy  I realize we are in Michigan and it isn't May 1st.  We have had snow storms during the last week in April.  But I am loving the warmer weather.

The Azaleas made it through the hard freezes, and I was surprised to see them bloom about 3 weeks ago!  Cyber-Spring!

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

AAAAAAAGGGGHHHH!!!!!

Overnight......5 inches of snow.....really WET snow......and still coming down rather hard.  By Wednesday we're supposed to be back to near 70 degrees.  I may just make good use of solar power to remove the darn stuff from driveway and sidewalks.  You know?   In keeping with our dear leader's push toward use of alternative energy.  If there is one talent I've finely hone over the years it can be described with one 4-letter word.....LAZY.(will the filter allow that one?)Smiley Wink  I think I've done my share of shoveling this past few months and Shirley can't shovel with her bum shoulder. (Humph....likely excuse).   Poor Alfie.....took him out for his morning draining and dump and he came back indoors looking like a huge snow ball.  Being as white as he is we couldn't tell where the snow in his hair ended and Alfie began.  So we had a trail of tiny snow balls all over the living room carpet.  Thank goodness it's nice clean water when it melts.  All disappeared now.

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

Spd, thanks for the photos of the beautiful azaleas. Nice and we need some colors up here. I checked a couple of your links and don't think azaleas can grow up here with the -10 to -20 winter temps. Even if they did survive don't think they would ever bloom.

Phil, did you ever consider duct taping that ipad on Shirley's snow shovel? Smiley Very Happy

Guess she does have a good excuse and hope she's on the quick mend.

Still pretty cool here and only 41 at noon. At least the sun's out but that won't last long with rain the next 2 days. Really looking forward to Thurs and next Sunday when temps will be in the high-60's with lots of sun. Smiley Happy

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

YW--thought they might be some cyber-cheer that Spring is coming!

Forgot to comment that's why I get irked with having to cover them up!  Shouldn't have to be doing that here as they are well-suited to our climate.  The 30 YO Red Ruffles are the ones that are blooming so well now.

Cannot believe y'all are getting more snow!  I thought that was finished and it was melting?

We got pounded with much-needed rain today...finally!

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

One of the problems with the jump in the time change is it creates way too much evening daylight for working outside in the flower beds and yard. Smiley Very Happy

Cut down all the dead stems from the Purple Coneflower and Black-eyed Susans while raking the leaves out of the beds. I always wait until spring to do this because the birds eat the seeds from the flower heads during the winter and can spread the flowers elsewhere.

The tulip bulb leaves were already 4"-5" tall and a real pain to clean the bed out without damaging the foliage. I should have done it earlier but too cold and wet. I came across these small leafed weeds and the tap root went clear down next to the bulbs. Some of these roots were 6"-7" long, looked like a dandelion root, and had to pull them out bare-handed because would break the root off with gloves on. And the ground is still cold!

Then it hit me what these weeds were. Nasty invasive Garlic Mustard which is growing everywhere in the woods here. Glad I got them out and didn't even notice them growing there in the Fall. The roots put out a chemical which will kill other plants or cause them not to grow. It's also sad the foliage is toxic to butterfly eggs/larvae which can be read in the link.

Then had to repair all the netting and wire I have around these beds. The deer and Charlie did a number on them over the winter.

Speaking of Charlie; his digging is driving me nuts and going through the same thing every year. The moles and chipmunks are everywhere now that the grounds thawed. Pretty soon I'll break Charlie of this by just a firm scolding or putting him in the house while I'm outside. He hates that. I also sprayed some animal/dog repellent in a huge tunnel he has dug twice trying to catch the chipmunks that run under my porch.

The crocuses are starting to bloom and we are supposed to have a real nice week of weather. At last Spring may be showing up and things are just budding/turning green. Smiley Happy

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

I'm tired just reading what you did!  If you have some spare time, our ground isn't frozen, and you can bring your dog (no underground varmits, though). Smiley Very Happy

It will be tedious cutting back parts that died from those that didn't.  And I don't even consider having mulch put down until after the Live Oaks do their pollen shedding.  It gets into/onto EVERYTHING!

73 here in Indy at 6 PM!  I believe that they (TV weatherperson) stated that March 16th was the average first 70 degree high temp here in Indy.  We missed it by a day.  Next Thuirsday, one guy is forecasting a high temp of 40 and snow showers. Smiley Sad

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

Well folks.....we topped out at exactly 80 degrees this afternoon.  The remote, wireless sensor is in the shade of the house on the north side.  So that is actual air temperature.  A nice walk with my buddy, Alfie, in my shirt sleeves with no sweat shirt and no cap.

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

High of 72 two days ago, 62 yesterday and 52 today. Daily temps are going down but at least the suns out. Rains start late tomorrow and they calling for possible snow Thurs with low of 25 at night. We don't need any long freeze since spring flowers are starting to bloom along with trees/shrubs budding out big time.
