Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

Another "cool" front blew through Indy last night with a reinforcing short of cool air.  Lots of wind and temps today in the 60's.  Maybe some light frost tomorrow.  We are still way down in the rainfall department but we got half an inch Wed. afternoon and that was as much as we received in all of August!

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

Our heat wave is supposed to end later this afternoon but temps could still near 100 before the front passes, after this past week my AC is waving the white flag. :smileylol:     Unfortunately only a 20% - 30% chance of rain today and tonight, after that, no rain is forecast for the next week. So the drought continues. :smileysad:

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

Hottest night in Indy in 75 years.  No it wasn't at a dance club but the low only fell to 81.  The hottest low temp since August 1936.

The NWS is still saying that it could get to 107, which would break the all time record.

jfw mentions the cold front.  It's passing through Chicago right now.  Dropped from 100 to 88 and some Northern burbs are in the 70's. Yeah baby!

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

Dave, that August of 1936 was when I decided to enter this world.  My pop, who was a physician, always joked that I was the first baby he ever saw born with an already existing heat rash.

We had high of 107.7 yesterday afternoon. That's measured on north side of house, in the shadow of the house.....about 6 ft. above the ground.

Right now....12:44 PM it is 104.1 and climbing.

Forecast is for slight cooling and possibility of showers.  I'll believe it when I feel the moisture falling on my face.

Uni, I'd take those 70 degree days ANYDAY! This heat is a killer!! it's supposed to be in the mid to high 90's here tomorrow in NEPA...Ugh!! Smiley Sad

Me too DC now that I'm back home! Quite a shocker coming from SD, getting off of a real cold plane, and about melting in the heat.

I walked around the woods surrounding my house/yard yesterday with my son in the 95 degree heat. It's unbelievable how many more big trees came down and almost looks like tornado damage rather than straight 80mph winds. The big trees are fastly disappearing with huge ice storms, hurricane Ike winds, our storms this past Spring, and now this. Never have there been so many high-wind violent storms lately and the 100+ year old downed trees can attest to that. Smiley Sad

Columbus tied an all-time record yesterday at 101 for the date. Hottest it's ever been there is 106 and with lots of summer left may reach that again.

I'm looking forward to the temps with highs in the mid 80's and lows in the high 60's this coming week.

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

Glad your son was there, Uni, to help out while you were away!

Well, we've cooled off but because of constant rain!  Power has already gone out twice and not even raining yet!  But we lose power all the time here for no reason at all. Smiley Mad

Can't complain as we need the rain!

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

Spd that's what happens when the general consensus is less govern the better. Sometimes you reach the point government has to make some big business do the right thing. We had some ice storms a few years ago that shut down power over wide areas. The Utilities made all power companies clear out right of ways. Now when we have a storm in summer or winter the outages are very small and usually from a whole tree that fell. With the cleared right of way they could get to the one damaged span instead of having to clear the right of way with several spans damaged. The power companies were suppose to be doing this all the time but they had gotten slack and were saving money.

Any way the cold front has moved in with a thunderstorm and the temp has dropped from around 100 to 80. Will have to wear my long johns tomorrow with temps in the mid 80s.

Well, I think this heat wave is over for us, although the drought still continues. Just checked my temp sensor history (located on NW facing side of house), max was 113.6. Smiley Surprised It doesn't record the time of the reading though.

I finally turned the AC off at midnight for the 1st time in a couple weeks and opened all the windows. A bit too humid at 75% but doesn't feel bad at 68 degrees and will be about 61 by early morning.

They're calling for possible rain later in the week but I'll believe it when I see it...

Phil: My mom was a December, 1936 baby.

CJ: Yes this heat wave.  Half of me is saying that the heat wave is over and the other half says that we are not even into August, yet.  We hit 105 twice this year, only one off of the record.

Indianapolis has not had an appreciable rain since early May.  We are down almost 8 inches for the year, while Bloomington is down 13+".The forecasters seem excited about Friday and Saturday and say that we may have rain that lasts longer than 2  minutes.  Last Sunday was close, Indy had rain to the South and Northwest but only 10 drops here.  Do it yourself fireworks are still banned as is all burning.  Read about the drought, here.

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

Rain, oh glorious rain!  Some hydrologist said that we could get 2 1/2" rain from Friday to Monday and he said that would not even get your shoes muddy, lol.

  • Friday Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. East southeast wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Friday Night Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 8pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. Southeast wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Saturday Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 84. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Saturday Night A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72.
  • Sunday A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 86.

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

Still at it here, and emptied 4" from gauges yesterday.  No power outages yesterday or YET today, but news says many are without power.  Non-stop local news coverage of rain, flooding has started, some creeks/bayous near to being out of their banks.

News said we've received more rain up to this time than ALL OF LAST YEAR!  Feast or famine. Smiley Sad

It has cooled off, and would be nice to enjoy if it would stop raining long enough.

On another note, a squirrel is hiding behind the big polycart (trash can) on back porch.  He scurried up the tree when I put trash in, but was there yesterday.  I fear he may be hurt or ill, squirrels don't hang out on the ground. Smiley Sad

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

Our best chance of rain seems to be Saturday night and Sunday, only 30% - 40%. Temps supposed to be around 90 the next couple of days, climbing to mid and upper 90's next week.

Hey I'm sure those resevoirs could use it considering last year. Used to live just west of Lake Tawakoni and I know DFW gets a lot of their water from there.

As for the squirrel, he might just be looking for a dry place to sit. Probably getting trench-foot sitting in the tree in that rain.Smiley Very Happy

Re: Let's Talk About the Weather - The New Temp Thread

Reservoirs are drying up here, too.  Many have dry docks and where the water was, it is no longer mud but hard, cracked, dirt.  Even the channels look shallow and narrow.
