It's been awhile since we talked about the Decorah Eagles.
Last season, Mom & Dad built a secondary nest and the folks at the Raptor Resource Project were not able install a new camera before the eggs were laid so we missed on last years brood but a new (fancy!) camera was installed after the babies fledged.
3 eggs have been laid.

Yep, Skeeter, I've been watching. That poor female Eagle has looked so miserable having to sit on those eggs while the snow was piling on and the wind was blowing. Three eggs. That is great. This female usually does produce three eggs but it is my understanding that many, if not most, lay only two. Sure hope that all three little ones survive to adulthood.
In the meantime....D-1 came home from Hudson's Bay, Canada last fall and she has spent the winter flying back and forth around the forested areas near Decorah. In another year she'll most likely be looking for a mate to build a nest with. I wonder if she will fly all that long distance back to the bay this summer. That trip always amazes me. She sure has the route down pat.

While mom and dad Bald Eagles are occupied keeping their three eggs warm in the nest near Decorah, Iowa,......D-1, our travelin' girl seems to have decided to start her trek north. In just a couple of days she flew about 66 miles north northwest to a position north of Rochester, Minnesota. They don't check her every day so today, 3/21, we don't know if she is hanging out a while or will head on north. Big cold front coming down from Canada so she may just hunker down for a while.

My Oklahoma eagles, both pairs have decided to use alternate nests this year so no following them. 5 years in a row watching them and this year they decide to move.

Yeah....from what we have been told by the folks in the Decorah, IA preserve....that construction of a new nest happens intermittenly and without warning. Last year we did not get to see much of the egg laying and the raising of the babies. But during the off season....a new camera and equipment has been mounted and focused on the new nest. So it's looking great this time.

We have two new baby eagles in the Decorah, IA preserve. Two down....one to go. #1 dug its way out on Wednesday and #2 arrived last night, Thursday, around 11:29 PM. Yet there is still a bit of snow scattered around the outer edge of the nest. Amazing. Now the real work begins. Dad will be busy hunting and bringing food to the nest.....and sitting in for mom who will want to get away every so often to do some hunting and exercise on her own.
