Keeping email after canceling Uverse Internet

If I have Uverse Internet with an sbcglobal.net email address, can I keep that email address when I cancel the internet service?  If I can, are there any fees I need to pay in order to keep it?

@My issue is I cancelled my Uverse account and have 4 @sbcglobal.net e-mail addresses that I don't want to lose.  Only 2 are linked to yahoo.  I got a new Uverse account at a different address and have new @att.net addresses with the same stuff before the @ sign.  Can I merge the @sbcglobal and the @att addresses?  Are the @sbcglobal accounts which are not linked to yahoo accounts going to disappear?  If I don't unlink the @sbcglobal and the @yahoo accounts, what happens?  Why does nobody have a trustworthy answer?  No offense to whoever answers here, but you'll be just one of many conflicting answers.  What I really want is an official ATT answer somehow, but that's not the way they do things anymore.

When you cancel service with at&t, you are able to keep your email addresses, whether they be old sbcglobal addresses or att.net addresses. The only thing you lose is support for the emails. What I mean by this is that when you have one of our email addresses and have active service, you can contact our website assistance team and have them reset your password if the self help options (Using 'Forgot Your Password?' on att.com) have not worked. When the service is cancelled, the only option you would have for resetting the pw would be the self help options on att.com, which are normally answering the security questions that were set up during set up internet service and assigning a new pw, or have a temp pw sent to an alternate email such as a gmail email which again, was hopefully set up during set up of internet service. If you forget the security questions or do not have an alternate email address already set up on your att email, then unfortunately there wouldn't be anything that anybody at at&t can do to reset the pw.

If you have sbcglobal email accounts, these should be able to be added to your current U-Verse and replace the att.net email addresses if this is what you wish to do. This can normally be done by a member of our tech support team. If this is able to be done, then you will once again have support for the email addresses, i.e. the ability for a Website Assistance rep to reset your pw. Your att.net and sbcglobal.net email's will not be merged and will not share an inbox. This answer is as official as it's going to get. I myself used to work with our Website Assitance and handled these types of calls on a daliy basis for about a year and a half. Trust me when I say that you will not lose your email addresses, but you will lose support for them.

mamabearlongs - You are supposed to be able to do it. I believe it becomes a regular Yahoo account, so you will lose some features. For insurance, you may want to open a gmail account and download all your stuff from at&t so you do not lose it.
Maybe, even use the gmail going forward so you are not tied to an ISP. If you want to do that set the at&t account to foreward e-nails to it.

Delete your att.net email ID and keep your Yahoo! email ID

You've canceled or disconnected your AT&T service, but you want to keep your Yahoo! email ID. We'll show you how. To keep your Yahoo! email ID you'll need to unmerge and then delete your att.net email ID.

To delete your att.net ID and keep your Yahoo! ID:

  1. Log in to myAT&T with your att.net email address. If you don't know your att.net email ID, see Understand your merged Yahoo! ID.
  2. In the User Information tab, to the right of your Member ID, select Delete Email

  3. The Delete Email confirmation displays. Select Ok.

    1. Note: Although the message in the box reads "All Information and messaging associated to the account will be deleted as well as all sub-accounts" this is does NOT happen. You have not lost any email, Address Book contacts, or other information on the Yahoo! side of your account. You have only removed the AT&T email address itself. Your account will still exist in mail.yahoo.com and you will continue to use the Yahoo! email address.

    2. To continue using your Yahoo! ID, visit Yahoo mail, and sign in. Select the Unmerge button in the bottom right-hand corner of the page.

Unmerge or transfer data from your AT&T Yahoo! sub-accounts before you unmerge your master AT&T Member ID from a Yahoo! ID or before you transfer data and preferences to a new free Yahoo! ID. If you neglect to unmerge or transfer the sub-accounts first:

    • Any merged sub-accounts will be automatically unmerged.
    • Any sub-accounts that are not merged with a Yahoo! ID will lose their data and preferences.

Once you unmerge a Yahoo! ID from an AT&T Member ID or transfer the data and preferences from your AT&T Member ID to a new Yahoo! ID, you will not be able to remerge your Yahoo! ID with an AT&T Member ID.

Ookay, thank you for the response, but does this mean that my email will be @yahoo.com and not @sbcglobal.net anymore?  I do not want to have to give out a new email address to anyone.

I would recommend that you send a Private Message to the ATTU-verseCare Community Specialist team.  One of the specialists will respond to your PM shortly.  Please look for the flashing envelope at the top right of the page for your response from a team member.

They will be able to provide you the answer.

I'm sure I should do this first and then once everything is good I can call the center to close the account?

Thanks again.

Thanks for your help.  I don't want to  presume that know much about YAHOO email, however, I wonder is it possible to "convert" the AT&T uverse email account to one of the YAHOO email products?  For instance there is the YAHOO plus paid ad free email, in addition to the "free" version.

The idea is to continue uninterrupted email, and still have some support for forgotten passwords and so forth.

As with the original poster, I soon will cancel my AT&T u-verse internet service.  Thanks.
