Stolen phone returned after 3 months

"My Samsung Galaxy Note 8 was stolen in March of this year. I reported it to AT&T and submitted a claim to Asurion. My friend, the account holder did not do her part. I never received a phone from the insurance co. However; this past June my phone was returned back to me by the one who stole it. Now I want to use my phone and be the account holder. Is this possible?"

First you need to get straight if insurance claim was made or not.

If not, but was reported as stolen it was blacklisted, so you have the account owner remove it from blacklist.

If your number is still active, maybe in a spare phone, you can swap the sim once it’s removed from blacklist. (Not before!)

The second part is asking the account owner to do a transfer of billing responsibility to you.

You have to go through the account owner to pay off and unlock your devices.
