Samsung Galaxy S3 Not Receiving Calls - Phone issue or Android issue?

I just got a Samsung S3 a week ago.  I have received calls and texts on it, but it appears that I am missing calls.  Somebody tried calling me 6-7 times in a row in a 30 minute time span yesterday and it never rang, and only one of those showed up as a missed call.  Today, the same thing happened again with two calls, and neither appeared in my missed call log.  They sent a text and it didn't appear until about 20 minutes after it was sent.

I live in a built up area where there should be good coverage, and looked at the map and am rated as "best coverage."  In the past six months, there were maybe two incidents at most when my old phone (not a smart phone) did not ring.  I have a normal amount of bars on my phone.

During both of these incidents, my phone was not in use, and the ringer was on with sufficent volume.

Does anybody have any recommendations for solving this?

Guys,

I got this issue fixed. You dont have to remove the battery or even restart your phone for that matter. This problem occurs mainly because of 4G LTE. I dont know if its the phone or the service. So, I have found an alternative.

What you need to do is add a new APN and run your device on 3G so that you can still get calls and browse until att or samsung fixes this issue. You can either use 4G toggle which you can download from google play to toggle between 3g and 4g. Or you can add as I have said above the new APN. Please go to Settings -> More settings -> Mobile Networks ->Access point names-> (+ new APN) . Give the Name of your choice but the APN should be defined as wap.cingular and finally save it. Change the existing apn to your newly created apn. Go to you home menu and you will see the 4G is used insted 4G LTE. You can even check your speed by using speed test.

Actually now I even have fewer dropped calls and I get the calls as soon as they call it.

Please watch the below url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TqXFd5aJcuY or read this link : http://forums.androidcentral.com/t-galaxy-s-iii/243505-jelly-bean-4-1-1-phone-calls-bug.html

<CM EDIT:

We are researching this but I have marked jan_raghavan's suggestion as an Accepted Solution for the time being because it's worked for a couple people.

I have to note that this is NOT an AT&T solution and it will limit your capabilities on the device because you won't be on 4G but since it's helped a few of you, I want to make sure it's visible.>

If you want help you must call:

{unpublished number removed}

This will take you directly to the engineering support (Level 3).

They are the only ones who understand or will even acknowledge this issue.  ATT knows of the issue but the lower service people are unaware and will just waist your time (I have spoken with many of them).

It is called a Circuit Switch Fallback issue.

They are very aware of it at the number listed above and will at least try to help.

They are now trying to lock me out of LTE.

I agree the support at ATT is pathetic.  I have waisted so much time with this issue because of their poor communication, lack of concern and denial of the issue (at lower levels).

I am very disappointed in ATT.

I too am having this issue going on three years now. I work from home and it's been horrible lately. When it started I just thought it might be my phone (windows TP2) I have full signal yet my wife will say she's called and texted me several times. I wouldn't get any of my texts until I made an outgoing call. After getting a new phone last year (android captivate glide) I thought the problem might be over but it still keeps up.
Wenzelr, the number you posted was removed. Please send it to me. I need this issue to go away before I do.

All I can say: I am ready to switch, Any other provider but ATT now.
Tried calling ATT several times and instead of telling me the real issue, they asked me to contact Samsung!!!
FIX ASAP or you are going to lose your business BIG TIME!! and That's a FREE Advice.

Also if you check this website:

http://forums.androidcentral.com/t-galaxy-s-iii/243505-jelly-bean-4-1-1-phone-calls-bug.html

there is a discussion about the exact same issue.

The telephone number is also listed there under the #2 response as a solution.

This issue is driving me nuts!  I have done the work around and set up a wap.cingular APN, but when I'm running that I can't receive MMS (picture) texts.  Is there something I can do in the APN to make it so that I can receive pictures via text?

As of right now I have to choose between receiving all of my calls and not getting picture texts OR not getting all my calls and getting picture texts.  Of course I keep it so that I can get all calls, but with how many people are experiencing this issue (on ATT and other networks), you would think there would be a fix by now............

Using the hashed-out phone number above, I did get an actual engineer who is going to have somebody call Monday with updates.
Thanks, wenzelr!

Go back to page 3 of this forum, and almost at the bottom of the page is a workaround by m.a.s.e. It will allow you to receive pictures in texts, no emergency call problems, etc. You phone will work perfectly, just not on LTE, which we are paying for, of course. I have been running this workaround for over a month, and it has been flawless. If I remember correctly, you will have to restart your phone after entering the code, which is not listed in the instructions, but other than that, it should get you through until this is fixed, or you can get out of your contract. :smileywink:

The problem seems to have gone even worse now. I used to be able to get connection and make phone call if I toggle airplane mode on and off. Now doing that or even rebooting the phone wouldn't help. A colleague with an iPhone 5 also has the same issue. So, it not a phone or an OS issue - clearly a network problem. This has done a serious reputational damage on AT&T. Please admit it and fix it soon.

I decided to call that support number somebody mentioned. AT&T confirmed that the issue has been going on since Nov last year. The rep confirmed that it's an issue with all LTE devices (both iPhone and Android). They thought they have resolved the issue but it turned out the issue is not fixed. They are still working on the it. She offered to change the network setting of my phone (on the back end) to limit the connection to just 2G/3G so that it won't switch to LTE. I was reluctant at first but have agreed to have it done so that at least the phone will be usable for now (with slower data speed). It seemed that they understand the issue but don't know how to fix the problem. I will have to live with 3G for now. Will post more if I have an update.

I had ATT switch me back to 2G/3G, but my phone ( GS3) goes back to LTE after a while.

Even with 3G, I still lost signal and had to reboot the phone to make it usable. This is really bad. It seems the problem is much more serious than thought. I didnt think I could get any more disappointed.

Update :
They're sticking to 4/8/13 before midnight as the deadline.
After that (and I have little confidence) we're going to be talking about adjusting the billing or cancelling the plan (without penalty, of course) due to their inability to supply services (4G LTE) that were contracted and paid for.

Or are you mentioning what CSR told you on phone?

Solution (might work)

Solution might be to disable LTE. Following steps are for S3 - not sure about other phones.

Found from one thread which was talking about saving battery.

1) While the phone turned is On - Remove back cover and press SIM card to move it out of slot (but not completely) - Don't remove battery
2) Phone will recognize there's no SIM & it will prompt for restart
3) Restart phone
4) After phone is turned on - Dial *#2263#  &  Wait for next options to appear
5) Select WCDMA (I think 2nd option) & under that WCDMA All (I think it's for HSPA+/3G)
6) Press SIM card back
7) Restart phone

This... works for sure.
But you would be downgrading from LTE.

I have the same problem with my galaxy note 2, replaced SIM cards but didnt help. Went to ATT store and they suggest go to warrenty center they can provide you refurbished replacement ...what ...I paid full price (700) to get this and now they want to replace with refurb and they referred to samsung support. Not sure if this can ever solve and it goes in circles.

guys,

its about time we will all finally understand.

we will not see any type of resolution from ATT.

our best bet is simply rooting our phone and removing the amature made ATT version of an OS with all their bloatware.

i did it, put JB 4.2.2 and i have zero issues since then.

sadly ATT had been nothing not even remotly close to helpfull.

their tech level is at a 2 years old.

completely useless.

waiting for my contract to end so i can run as far away from a company that know nothing but take money.

I agree vsr8282. I fought with them for weeks. New Sim card, microcell tower, hours on the phone, reseting, locking to 3G, etc.

Finally they mailed me a refurb and it worked (amazingly) even though they said it probably would not. I agree it sucks when you paid for new, but after months of use the refurb was in better shape than my original.

Good luck.

the only reason why it is working for u is cause the refurb came prolly with 4.1.2 and ur old phone was 4.1.1 and needed to be updated via kies...
the issue here that ATT messed up with the 4.1.1 update with their bloatware and corrupted the files that control the switch between voice and data.
if all here will update to 4.2.x or even 4.1.2 and above the issue will be resolved.

waiting for my contract to end so i can run as far away from a company that know nothing but take money.

I too will not sign anymore contracts with AT&T and await my expiration date. My entire family (3 accounts, family plan) is done dealing with this. After much work by me, I elevated my issue to a tech level that was aware of this issue only to be given false appeasement. They acknowledged the LTE issue, gave me a short term case number and never contacted me since. So in essence, they said, yes, we know there is a problem, might or might not get fixed, no idea when, now go away. First tier tech support still has no idea of the LTE problem if you call them so everyday, AT&T is putting people through hoops like new sim cards, refurbs, etc. Why they would want to spend all that money and  annoy customers is a mystery to me. Further my wife has a personal phone and a company phone with AT&T and has no intention of remaining with them. This issue is discussed amongst all her co-workers and there is concensus that perhaps they need to go with a more reliable carrier as well. I suspect that if I called higher levels of tech support weekly and demanded some satisfaction for a device that can't do what I contracted for, eventually they might do something for me but as I am sure they are counting on, I simply do not have the time or ambition to deal with them for hours on the phone any longer.

whats to do with April 8, is there any update get pushed for this bug? I don't beleive the CSR words anymore ( because very few of them has upto the mark knowledge on these devices , technology and problems) and also not why sure they don't accept and forward to right person instead of wasting lot time.
