Latest Galaxy S6 Edge update draining battery

The latest update that was pushed to my device on 9/23 is draining my battery to the point where the phone is almost unusable. The highest battery consuming app is listed as Android OS. When can I expect a bug fix for this issue?

Alright guys,

Remove your OCULUS! Everything, I believe there are 3-4 apps that related to it. I removed every Oculus app. I did it at 8 AM and now is 9 AM.

8 AM: Battery 80%

9 AM: Battery 75%

I didn't play with my phone but just sit there on the table.

Heat: At first I turned off the safe mode after I uninstall Oculus it got heat up a bit, I was about to get upset but I just ignore it for few mins and it stabilized the heat and now it seems back to normal. Hooray! Smiley Wink

Hi @jbolanos66!

I am sorry to hear about the battery issues that you are having since the update. We were getting reports of battery issues before the Marshmallow update. The release of 6.0.1 was supposed to help with that but, ironically we started receiving reports from some that their battery issue started after the update.

I have reached out to both Samsung and Google about this. There is not yet anything that I have found that indicates this is a “known issue”. It sounds like you went to the battery usage screen, which was a good start to see what exactly is consuming the battery.

If you start noticing weird battery drain, you should try performing a simple restart to see if that returns things to normal.

Since the update, have you made sure all your apps were updated? If apps aren’t the problem and a simple restart doesn’t work, it’s time to start fiddling with some settings and working on some of your habits.

In my experience, disabling features when they aren’t in use tends to have a positive impact on overall battery life. It is recommended that you shut off Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth connectivity, NFC, GPS, and cellular data when you don’t need it.

You might have done this already. These are merely some suggestions and reminder of things that you can try. If this doesn’t work, then the last resort is always to do a factory reset.

If need be, please go to the Device Support page for instructions on how to back up your device and how to perform a factory reset. Make sure your phone make and model are selected.

For backup instructions - Click on “View All Solutions”. Under Device Topics on the left side, click on “Backup and Restore. For reset instructions - Under Device Topics, click on Troubleshooting and Reset Device.

Try that and let me know how it works out for you. If you have any more questions or concerns, feel free to reply to this thread.

Thank You.

Try disabling your Bluetooth radio for a day, and see if the "Android OS" battery usage declines. It will likely move from the top of the usage, to the bottom.

Most likely you have something, such as a Bluetooth finder device, a PC, or other BT connection that's poling a "bit too much".

I had one that gave me fits when I went to Nougat (7.0), I had to disable it, until Google works things out here.

If this fixes it, and you want to use BT devices, the process is a bit tedious to figure out what's doing it, but worth it, long-term.

Start by adding in one device at a time (hint: typically this isn't audio devices, such as headsets), and watch the drain on "Android OS", to see if it creeps back up, typcially a 8-12 hour window is enough to check each device.

I am seeing the same issue on my S7. I tried restarting and still see the issue. The phone gets REALLY hot. I put it in ultra power saving mode and it seems to stabilize. Just as the OP said Android OS is the top of the list in battery usage. The AT&T update happened late last night and this started happening this morning.

I am also having battery issues with my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge after the September 26, 2016 OTA update claiming Security updates.  My battery went from 100% fully charged at around 7 am when I took it off the charger down to 21% at 11 am.  For reference, I use email and my phone throughout the day and typically end the workday with around 70% battery life.

I restarted my phone and continued to have the issue.

I think shutdown the phone and waited for approximately 10 minutes.  Issues remain.

I attempted a cache wipe, however now the phone is stuck at "Downloading... Do not turn off target" for some reason.

Any help/ thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,

Nick

Same issue since update, my s6 edge is dead in around 3 hours from 100% charge.  And I'm not even using it.  It's very very hot all the time too.

I just chat with one of the Samsung reps. She asked me to go to Samsung Center / Best Buy. I want to go tonight, do you think it would help? If this is from the OS update, I am thinking it would be useless to try to "fix" it? I am going on a honeymoon Saturday so if my battery drain all the time, I'd won't have a phone to get around / take pictures lol.

Same issue with S7 Edge. My battery is even still going down while charging from a USB (non-fast charge cable). Wireless and Bluetooth are both off. Updated a day ago.

Top battery usage culprits are Android System (#1) and Google Play services (#2). Third was Ticketmaster which has been disabled for several hours now. Definitely an Android issue.

This issue has been known for 3 months through other carriers. Shame on AT&T for ignoring known issues and pushing out bad updates.

Has anyone tried to take it to best buy where they can do a run through of your phone on site? I'm planning to go tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone had success solving it. Also, if the worse case scenario happens and our phones can't be brought back to normal, would this be on AT&T or samsung? Would we get replacement phones even if our warranty is expired?
