Data Connect Plan: Can it be used to update a tablet firmware?
I am not an active AT&T subscriber anymore, and I would like to update the firmware on an AT&T tablet. I know the update is done over wifi, but it requires an active AT&T subscription. One option is to get a Prepaid Go Plan for about $25 plus some fees. However, I would like to know if the device can be activated/validated with one of the Data Connect plans which start at $5. This tablet used as a wifi device now, so I don't have a need to be on the AT&T LTE network except for the OTA updates. Would any of you guys know if that is possible?

You can purchase a Data Connect plan if you wanted, however there are also other options depending on what tablet you have.
One option, is to put a friends AT&T SIM card in your tablet just to receive and perform the update.
If you have a Samsung AT&T tablet, you can bring the device to a Samsung Experience at your local Best Buy and have the update pushed to your device.
You also have the option to take it to an AT&T Device Support Center if you have one near you!
Some manufactures allow you to update the device online through certain clients. Check out this awesome post by our ACE @GLIMMERMAN76 for specific information regarding each manufacturer.

Hey Anabel,
Thank you so much for the update. I did try to borrow the SIM card from a friend of mine who is a current AT&T customer. The sim card came from a smartphone (iPhone 6). Although the tablet did recognize the sim card, the device (SM-T707A) could not connect to the LTE network. The mobile data option was checked. The person is not available right now, so I cannot try it again.

Just an update to close this thread. The suggestion of using a borrowed SIM card from an active subscriber did not work for me. For whatever reason the tablet would not connect to the AT&T 4G LTE network with the SIM card I borrowed from a friend. I ended up signing up for a one day pass under the Data Connect plan option. It was $5 for 24 hours which allowed me to successfully update the tablet.

I understand the SIM card you tested your Samsung Tablet with was borrowed from an iPhone 6 device. It is important to make sure both devices support the same network technologies in order to receive service network properly.
