Unhappy Kool-Aid Drinker

I just happened to be working in my home office today, and watched the RG lose total sync twice within a 2-3 hr. period.

Only 1 HD channel on (direct Ethernet to RG) and using main desktop connected to RG.  No appliances running or lights on, just me and the sunlight doing my work.

This is getting REALLY tiresome!  And no telling how many times it's happening when I'm not here.  (No, I haven't looked at the logs yet.)

Rarely do I see total signal loss at night now (during those alleged nightly maint. hours), but it happens several times a week during the day.

Should I call Comcrap?  This is how bad it's getting!

Finally got the 3801 and all has been well...until a recent power outage and all TV boxes would not come back up.  Resolved that in another thread.  Overall, 3801 has been great (so far). :smileywink:

Hey, fellow Texan! Do not despair.  :smileyhappy:

Have you posted screenshots from the UVRT to see what might be going on?

It wasn't on when this went down. :smileysad:

But SJ has looked at my stats several times before and all looks good. :smileysad:

Will be happy to if you think you can see something I don't.

OK, thanks.  You know it's bad when I am frustrated enough to think of Cable! :smileymad:

When it does go out, it's usually between 34 and 39 seconds for some reason.

Looks perfect.  No errors at all.

In fact, what happened to cause the hiccup is that the router rebooted.  The time since last boot is only 50 minutes.

If you didn't reboot the router, and you didn't have a power flicker, then I'd say you have an RG that's going bad.

You might want to have them come out and replace it ... ask for a new 3801HGV.

No power outages or flickers, or reboots. :smileysad:

One other thought, the RG is plugged into a battery backup that ATT provided (all the early install problems here).  They also added a 3-prong ground adapter to the RGs plug.  Do you foresee any problems that setup might be causing?

Could be that the battery backup is having problems.  Perhaps it's switching to battery for whatever reason, but during the transition it's causing the RG to lose power, which would reboot it.

You might try having the RG straight into the wall for a few days and see what happens.

OK, I'll need to make a plan for re-routing cords to another wall.

I haven't heard the beep on the backup (like when the power goes out), but anything is possible in this place! :smileywink:

Thanks for the help.

Just posting an update (for proof of my case). :smileywink:  I was not at my desk to see the RG, but TVs froze up; but I did have UVRT running.  Only differences posted.

Ya, it rebooted again.  Looking more and more like a bad RG.

I'll tell them you said so. j/k!

No need to plug it in elsewhere, IMO; it's on the way out.

And you mentioned the newer model; I thought some techs said they were having troubles with them on coax installs?

No, the problem with the 3801HGV's was on FTTP installs, and I think that has been corrected in the latest firmware.

OK, I guess I'm always looking for a way to ditch the coax. :smileyvery-happy:

Will let all know how it goes.

Ever since getting a new RG (and both regular STB's and the DVR replaced and some new connectors) my RG reboots have practically vanished!  I was getting 2-3 per day and now maybe 2 a month.

SJ had mentioned that the RG may be flipping to battery power from the battery backup.  Does it not beep when it is on battery?  Mine does.

I do not have U-Voice but have a battery back up.  Tier 2 said that it is redundant, can cause problems, I do not need it and so on.  The last inside tech said that i should leave it in place as it does have a filter to remove line noise and stabilize the AC.  Is that correct?

Good luck, Spd.

It's been increasing in incidents, and no, I mentioned earlier that the backup is not beeping.  It still works because the beeps start when there's a power outage.

I don't have Voice, but my install had many problems; their last effort was to run Cat5 from the NID and the tech brought his manager with him, and the manager told the tech to go buy a battery backup!

We had another meltdown this morning around 8:30.  :smileymad:

I'm kind of busy the next few weeks, but will be calling to get it replaced.

That is good that you are problem-free.  With all the problems I had with the initial install, I doubt they'll go the extra mile again for a rip-and-rebuild like you got!  But it may be the next step because this is UNACCEPTABLE.

I wonder what the "life" is for some of that equipment.  I'm coming up on 3 and 1/2 years.  Things seem to be working fine, but the freezes and occasional outages are increasing.  Last time I talked to tier 2, they said it looked like I had a bridge tap and they may have to send someone out to dig up the cable and find it!  Based on what I've read lately about digging up yards, I'm reluctant to get that mess started.  Guess I'll wait 'til something really bad happens. :smileysad:  Hope they get you fixed up, Spd!

I know, and why I need to set aside time to deal with this--all those RG settings to screenshot!

SJ already recommended I do a Reset a while back since I have 2 or more long lines of numbers/letters in my Blocked MAC Addy page!

This is my 2nd RG, since mid-2007.  Nothing was wrong with the original, but that's how they decided to fix the Wireless situation here.

Not looking forward to any of this. :smileysad:

I had my "two per month" twice on Saturday, within 10 minutes of each other. :smileymad:  Could have been the wind causing a brief power loss or UV signal loss.  My wife said that it rebooted today, during strong T-Storms.  Wonder if a ground or diplexor may be getting flaky on mine?

Happy to hear your model 3801 is working.  They sent me one last Friday to replace the old style RG that suddenly died.  This 3801 is terrible.   It appears the electrical shielding is faulty.  Any large electrical motors near it, like a vacuum causes it to go red.  Any T-storms in the area cause it to reboot dozens of times per hour.  And with the rain this week, it has been difficult to watch TV or use the internet. The old unit was in our exercise room (where the line came into the house).  It ran there for years.  With this one, the minute we turn on the treadmill, it goes red, even though the treadmill is on a totally different electrical circuit.

Well, so much for my post yesterday, about electrical shielding/interference.  AT&T U-verse tech came out today.  Right away he said it was a line problem.  He went to the pole box a block away and found a bird's nest that was letting rain into the box.  That was dropping the line value so low, that any electrical interference would drop the line value below minimums causing the RG to reboot. Now with the higher line value, electrical interference will have some effect but not drop the value so low the RG re-boots.  Even the treadmill does not kill the RG anymore.  Kudos to Chris from AT&T Milwaukee.  He found that one right away instead of putting in a ticket to get a line guy out to climb the pole.
