Does my 2 wire 214 UVerse router have a firewall?

I'm a new subscriber to both UVerse TV and internet, although previously had the AT&T DSL service with a Motorola modem.

My prior setup had my LAN router -- a Linksys model -- connected to the DSL modem. Both the modem and the router had firewalls built-in. So there was a fair amount of confidence that the system was secure from "outside eyes".

When the tech installed the UVerse equipment he pointed out the fact that the new unit, a "2 wire 214", was also an ethernet modem. This was welcome news, since I now could simplify the wiring and device mix, and did so by removing the Linksys unit. Since the instal, however, it had ocurred to me that we had not discussed the security features of the newer hardware.

Does anyone have any firewall information about the UVerse modem/routers?

Yes, it stops everything, but what your computer has requested.  Also, official ATT websites connect for TV channels and other official reasons. 😉

Perhaps you can help me with my problem which could be related to this same one originally posted. I am running Linux Mint 13 and Firefox. So far, www.distrowatch.com is the only website that I can't access. It comes up as a blank white screen with no error message, even though I checked it on www.http://downforme.org showing that it is NOT offline. I never had this problem before with Comcast cable or residential DSL. I just had AT&T U-verse installed last Friday 5/24 using the 2WIRE 3800 HGV-B Gateway. I've read on the AT&T forums that these Motorola gateways can cause problems with certain websites not coming up properly or not at all. I've also read that one possible solution is to change DNS settings, which I did to Google settings 8.8.8.8 but it didn't help. Any ideas?

Any suggestions would be appreciated as this problem has me stumped. I checked the firewall log and the address for www.distrowatch.com (66.180.174.35) isn't in the log. All other websites come up just fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

I received a tip from someone at the LinuxQuestions.org website to try to bring up the European mirror of www.distrowatch.com. I tried and YES the website came up using http://distrowatch.gdsw.at with the .at (Austria) suffix!

I also ran the Linux traceroute and telnet commands on this website's IP address and came up with the following output:

rick@Beltz-Family ~ $ traceroute distrowatch.com
traceroute to distrowatch.com (66.180.174.35), 64 hops max
1 192.168.1.254 (192.168.1.254) 1.382ms 1.479ms 0.905ms
2 162.197.64.2 (162.197.64.2) 24.227ms 20.327ms 20.386ms

rick@Beltz-Family ~ $ telnet 66.180.174.35 80
Trying 66.180.174.35...
Connected to 66.180.174.35.

Does this help you any to ascertain where the problem may be? Any explanations would be appreciated, technical or otherwise. Thanks.
