It seems some stores with the AT&T brand name are franchisees.These franchises are small businesses owned by an entrepreneur hoping to make a profit off this smartphone fad.
That confused me as well.

Like you and many other long time customers the AT&T brand name represents dependable phone service.
AT&T’s management may have decided now to go the marketing/sales (“BOGO”) route to make more money.
I’m not too keen on marketing people taking over a company because sales become more important than the primary mission to provide phone service.
Wells Fargo also was a well-respected company until their management pushed their employees to get new credit card accounts.So If it was a slow month fraud was committed.

I was able to buy an iPhone SE at the $49.99 price on September 6, 2018, at a local ATT store. I got a new number and started a monthly prepaid plan. I also signed up for AutoPay.

Hi canyoutellme,
$49.95 is a great price to pay for an Apple SE. I shopped around for a SE in July 2018. The Verizon and Apple price was @$349.
