Using a prepaid sim card on a postpaid phone...HOW to?

Using a prepaid sim card on a postpaid phone...HOW to?

My dad gifted me an ATT iPhone X under 2-year contract on his plan. He lives in a different state and decided to cut the phoneline. I use the phone mostly for apps when I'm connected to wifi but I need a phone line. It's still under contract and therefore, locked to ATT. Can I purchase an ATT prepaid sim card and put it on my iPhone? Would that work or do I need to contact ATT customer service? Which I would rather not do, it's his account.

Hi, @SuperEzzie,

We'd certainly love to look at helping you use a prepaid SIM card in your iPhone. To do that, you would need to switch it from the postpaid plan to a prepaid plan. Take a look at the requirements and the how to switch between the types of plans.

Have a great weekend!

@SuperEzzie Yes, you can use a prepaid SIM card in any ATT compatible phone. There is no requirement to convert the line currently associated with that iPhone to prepaid. It certainly can be converted but not required. Either way, if that line is converted to prepaid or cancelled, your dad will have to pay off the phone or pay an ETF fee if on a service contract.
