Windows 10 Upgrade for Lumia 640XL

When is AT&T pushing out the Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 upgrade for my Microsoft Lumia 640XL? The Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor says my Microsoft Lumia 640XL is eligible for the upgrade. The upgrade was released months ago. I am tired of waiting and waiting and waiting.

Hello @TWolfRed!

Great question! I will be happy to help today!

Currently, it does not look like Windows 10 has been pushed out by AT&T yet for this specific phone model. Check out our Update the software for the Microsoft Lumia 640XL for more specific information!

I recommend checking out the Windows Insider Program. After doing some research, it looks like this is a way to get Windows 10 onto your device now!

Let us know if you have any questions! Thank you so much and have a great day!

@HTLinLA Do you have enough free space on the phone? You may need to free up some space. Try moving pictures to SD memory. Have you tried installing while on Wi-Fi?

Hello @HTLinLA

Thank you for your question!

If you try to download this from the Windows store online, does it allow you to? After signing into your account, it should say this is not compatible with your device, and provide a reason why. Click here to access the page! After researching this error, it looks like this means there may be a conflicting app, or something on your phone that is preventing the download. By accessing it online, we should be able to find out if it is simply not compatible or if there is an issue with something on the phone itself.

Just keep us updated! Have a wonderful day!

@darthspader The Advisor tool doesn't help, unfortunately, as AT&T never released this for the 640XL (just the 640, go figure, the same phone, bigger screen), so it *looks* like there would be an upgrade, but OTA doesn't work.

The Insider program (Release Preview branch) is THE solution, they get a better build anyway (stability and battery-life), and then get opted into future updates, direct from MS, all OTA.

I sort of doubt AT&T is going to un-gate this, ever, at this point...

@pgrey what about the link I shared it states: Update summary Effective October 27, 2016, AT&T and Microsoft released a software update for the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL. You can download the update via Firmware Over The Air (FOTA). A Wi-Fi connection is required for the update.

Thanks @darthspader, I missed the inline link (I used to use these a lot, but found that on single-word links I had trouble with people not seeing them, now I see why;-]).

That's interesting, I've been espousing Insider (I still think it's the better path, anyway, get on RP ring and stay there, all the builds are good/excellent) for forever, and then ATTCares even recommended it.  At that point, I figured that was "it" for the 640XL release (and the 950, and ...), it's surprising they did it at this point, I wonder how many people this affects still ;-]

@pgrey I have tagged this post so other 640XL owners can hopefully find this easier and help them faster. Thanks again! 🙂
