Tablet Sim Card (Data) and Cell Phone

Instead of getting a portable hotsport, can one use a data simcard and a cell phone to provide moble hotspot? Will they work the same?

Howdy from Austin, TX @tim horton!

I can totally help you out with that! I can walk you through setting up your phone as a mobile hotspot to be able to connect to Wi-Fi!

To use your phone as a hotspot, there are a few requirements before getting started:

  • You need a 4G or other device with mobile hotspot and/or tethering capabilities.
  • A qualified data plan; to learn more, visit Data plans with mobile hotspot included. Note: Mobile hotspot and tethering are not supported on AT&T Unlimited Data Plan.

Visit AT&T Device Support to view tutorial to connect to a personal hotspot or mobile hotspot.  If personal hotspot or mobile hotspot tutorial isn't listed, your device may not support mobile hotspot.

Setting up a mobile hotspot is free, however every device you connect or tether uses data from your Mobile Share or other qualified data plan. To learn how to manage usage, visit Manage mobile hotspot data usage.

Take care and have a wonderful day! If you have any other questions, feel free to let me know, just reach back out!

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, it did not answer to my question. May be I will try to state it in a different way.

I know all about setting up a cell phone for wifi hotspot. So with the same phone that is capable of providing hotspot, can I put in a sim card that is for data only and use that for mobile hotspot instead of purchasing a mobile hotspot device? Is there any disadvantage in doing that?

I’m sorry about that!

Is the tablet currently linked on your account? The SIM card for the tablet is going to be associated with the IMEI number for that specific device along with the data plan. We are unable to guarantee that it will transfer over the features to the phone, but it is definitely worth a try. Also, the data plan for the tablet will need to be on a qualifying plan that offers mobile hotspot and tethering. Cell phones do require having talk and text features, which is provided through the SIM card itself.

If you are needing a new SIM card for the phone, you can get one free of charge at any AT&T Corporate store location.

Have a great rest of the week!
