Readout mode

What exactly does the Readout mode do on the Ease?  Does it give you an alert or what does it do.  Does it just show you what the text says and does it not alert you?  I am a little confuse as to what it is supposed to do.

In readout mode, your phone will tell you who is trying to contact you.  It will say, "One new message from John Doe" or "John Doe is calling" or "One new voicemail from John Doe."  Those may not be the exact words, but you get the effect.
