My Server Firewall is Blocking Access via AT&T Hotspot

I work from home as a web developer in a rural area in North Florida. I need to use an AT&T Hotspot for my internet. I'm using a Netgear hotspot that I bought at an AT&T store, and Mac computers.

Recently,  access to my hosting server and websites on that server are being blocked every few hours by the firewall at my upstream provider, Liquid Web. I can get access via other internet connections.

  • Does this sound familiar to anyone, and how might I troubleshoot this?

It used to be that whenever the connection to the hotspot was off, then turned on again, the firewall would block me until I manually whitelisted the IP address I got from Chrome. What's curious about that is that I had two IP addresses. One I found in Firefox and one I found in Chrome. The firewall would have already whitelisted the one from Firefox, but I always had to manually list the one I got from chrome.

I just looked up what NAT is, and maybe it explains the two IPs. One is coming and one is going. Does anyone know if this is correct? Just curious, which one might be the one that gets whitelisted automatically?

  • Maybe both these issues would go away if I got a 'Public IP Address.' Could that be what I need?

Thanks for any leads you all can give.

Cheers!

Hello @CLGolden,

Having your access blocked by a firewall can be problematic, especially if you work from home as a web developer!  I can help guide you towards the proper route to handle this.

From the way you describe it, it does not sound like it is an issue with the HotSpot, but possibly something related to Liquid Web or Chrome.  There have not been any changes to the AT&T HotSpot on our end.  I recommend reviewing the settings within the Netgear to see if there is a specific one which can allow constant connection.

This could also possibly be an issue with a built in Firewall within your computer which can cause problems.  Please click here for information about disabling it.  I do recommend you contact Liquid Web in order to see if this something caused from their end as they are your upstream provider.

I hope this information helps.  Have a great day!

As it turned out AT&T was blocking my hosting server IPs. They whitelisted them and suggested I set up my reverse DNS differently to minimize this from happening in the future, which I will do.
