Lumia 640xl Windows 10 update

I don't want to update my Lumia 640 xl to Windows 10 using the Windows Insider Program. And I want the full official version but when will AT&T release the Update Help Please.?!

Hi @Lildennis12

Thank you for posting your question in the AT&T Community Forums! We are here to help! We appreciate your business and we definitely understand the need for the latest version of your OS, and apologize for the delay.

At the present time we unfortunately do not have a precise date of release for the Lumia 640 XL. In most cases, updates will be posted on the day of release.

When the update is made available, you will receive an over the air notification on your device with step-by-step instructions to update your software. To check your device for the software version, tap on the Settings tile → Tap Phone Update.

For more information on the Windows 10 update, you can click on Microsoft’s website. From that website, you are able to download the Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor app – available free in the Windows Store – where you can easily check for upgrade availability and begin the upgrade in just a few easy steps.

Hope this helps! Thank you for choosing AT&T for your wireless services!

Fine, but why can't we get a ballpark timing estimate?  I can go ahead and pay to switch to an Android now or risk it with a developer verison of Windows 10 on my current device if its going to be a long time, but the lack fo clarity is extremely unhelpful.  There is a huge difference between next month and next quarter for a lot of people halfway through a contract.  Just saying "updates will be posted on the day of release" is opaque and completely ignores what we're asking.  That is an easy way out.  There is no way that the team at AT&T responsible for intergrating Windows 10 doesn't have a gantt chart showing the exact day this update should roll out inclusive of possible delays.  Provide a real response for the 640 XL, 830, etc and this will be a much happier place.

I have to agree. Windows 10 has been out a long time now. Microsoft has certified the 640XL, so how much more testing has to be done by AT&T? Even a ballpark time would be appreciated.

I'd suggest considering the Insider Program, but the "Release Preview Ring".

It's quite stable, and actually has a much better overall build than the current AT&T W10m devices are getting (.456 vs .107).  It's also got far better battery life, about 50% on most phones.

Of course there are risks involved with self-updating your phone, but there's a recovery tool, in the event of a failure; I've yet to see a phone that is un-recoverable with the tool.

*If this (or another post in this thread) fixes your problem/issue, please mark it as solved, and I'll tag it, to make it easier for others to find the answer(s). Thanks.

We are in September now. I have had the 640 XL for over a year with the promise that I would get Windows 10. When?

@denisw your answer is above... AT&T does not pre-announce updates.

I have a 640 and that has already received the official release of windows 10 mobile. This is a-hat policy from att. If the lesser model can and ALREADY received the update directly from your att servers, then PLEASE flip the switch for the 640 XL.

Well, this is nonsense, because things like Skype will stop being supported by October (yes, I realize they claim to support it through "early 2017" with "limited functionality" but I don't put much stock in that given their track record).  And here we are in mid September with no progress from AT&T.  Who knows what other apps will go away while we wait.  I've already seen some be "discontinued" and stop working because they are moved to the new infrastructure/store. Personally I am not a huge fan of WP 10, sucks in many ways compared to 8.1, but I'm not willing to become an iSheep or use Android at this point, and I need a functional phone.

This has happened for every upgrade with AT&T. jrock1 is spot on - the lower model can get it but we can't? One has to start wondering if they are intentionally trying to kill WP.  MSFT actually tries to support us for once and you guys hang us up??

Get your stuff together and stop screwing your customers. I've been a customer since 2000 when it was still Cingular. This kind of stuff is what makes people change carriers.

@jrock1@jcmaedl I'd strongly suggest you bit the bullet, and move to the Insider - Release Preview ring.

You are correct, some services are going to be discontinued, as interfaces age, it's the naturual progression (of almost any phone with data services, really, just varying rates/schedules).

I appreciate your efforts to help us install WP 10.

I think everyone is aware of the option to use Insider Preview.  I think what people are trying to say is that we don't want to, and further, we shouldn't have to. Now that I look at it, the OP mentions it and the fact that he does not want to use it in his first sentence.

Insider Preview does allow us to install WP 10, however it does not address the problem of AT&T failing to release updates.  AT&T pulled this same stuff with the Lumia "color" updates. One should not have to do such things to keep the phone up to date when an offical release is available.

You mention deprecation as a natural progression.  I'm not arguing that point, but the concept doesn't apply to this discussion because in this case we aren't complaining about being left behind by the manufacturer/platform, but rather the carrier.

If AT&T can't deliver updates in a reasonable fashion, they need to get out of the way and allow Microsoft to do it directly.  Microsoft is already doing its best to alienate an already shaky user base.  This doesn't help.
