Internet Device for RV

I have purchased a RV / Travel Trailer and plan to leave in the next couple weeks traveling throughout the Midwest and Southwest. I know AT&T offers a Velocity, Unite Pro and Unite device to create secure internet access while traveling and camping. What are the differences in these three devices?

Hello @BamaGolfNut!

Congratulations on your new RV, sounds like fun!

I’ll be happy to help with your question about our mobile hotspots. They’re great options for traveling and sharing data with all of your wireless devices.

The AT&T Velocity offers connectivity for up to 10 Wi-Fi devices, up to 10 hours of battery life and MicroSD file sharing between any devices connected to the Velocity. The Velocity is MicroSD expandable up to 32GB.

The AT&T Unite Pro lets you connect up to 15 Wi-Fi enables devices. It also includes the Battery Boost feature. With the included cable, simply attach your smartphone to your AT&T Unite Pro and charge it from the hotspot.  You’ll also get up to 16 hours of battery use with the AT&T Unite Pro.

The AT&T Unite Explore is great for traveling.  It lets you connect up to 15 Wi-Fi enabled devices to the Internet, has the Battery Boost option, provides up to 22 hours of battery life, is IP65 rated and MIL-STD-810G, certified for protection against shock, water, dust, and dirt.

It also has Parental Controls and Content Filtering feature. You can filter select websites and block phishing and potentially harmful Internet content. Wi-Fi can also be shared and managed using Guest Wi-Fi, which includes a timer that can be set for the amount of time you want to let guests connect, and it will automatically turn off the Wi-Fi when their time is up.

In summary, all three are great options for data access on the go and will work very well in your RV.

If you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

I hope this helps. Have a great day and safe travels!

If you are on a mobile share plan with smartphones, you already have the ability to tether with your existing device and plan.

https://www.att.com/shop/wireless/devices/hotspots.html

Please note these devices have different prices, the lower price requires a 2 year contract, with an ETF for terminating the contract.  The higher price is contract free.  If you are looking for a temporary device, you need to discuss the cost involved.

Hi Valarie,

Thank you for the update explanations -- they helped a lot.

There is only Carol and myself -- our iPhones, iPads and my iMac as far as devices.
I have the 6GB monthly plan with rollover.

I'm assuming that these devices draw on Cellular and use "data" as opposed to WiFi -- right?

I'm not sure I need the IP65 rated and MIL-STD-810G, certified for protection against shock, water, dust, and dirt. What are they and do you recommend them?

What are the prices for the 3 different devices?

Thank you for your help -- we pick up our new RV tomorrow. We're planning to travel 2-3 weeks per month.

I provided the link to all hot spot devices.  Please select the "no annual contract" option to see the full price ($149 - $199)

Yes, these use cellular data and are cabable of using hundreds of GBs a month if you stream video or connect to laptop computers.

 If purchased at full price, You have options for using these devices on short term data only plans, or adding to Mobile Share plan for a short period of time.  At the discounted price you must continue paying a line fee for a full 24 months.

please look into your plan options

@BamaGolfNut!

You are correct! All three hotspot devices are going to draw the connection from the cellular data from your account’s plan. In your case, you have the 6GB mobile plan, so the hotspot device will use that allotment of data.

The AT&T Unite Explore is more of an outdoorsy device. If you are planning on being around areas that are near water, sand, etc., you might want to consider a device that can withstand that type of environment.

Thank you @lizdance40! The website that was provided is going to give you a great run down of the device prices and you can again compare the three devices to see what best suits your needs. You can click on Mobile Hotspots to take you to the Shopping page.

Let us know how it goes!

@BamaGolfNut, you don't need to buy any of these devices, your iphone is already capable of doing the same thing. Just turn on the hotspot feature and connect your mac and ipad. What you will need to do is up your data plan to cover the data usage. Depending on what you are viewing, you may need as much as 50 GB. But you can change your plan at any time and backdate it to the start of the billing cycle to avoid overage charges or lower your plan if your not using as much as you expected.

Keep in mind that many campgrounds now offer free wifi (just like motels), so you can save your data for use on the road.

I know this isn't just about internet service for RV, but I feel it's related.  For any of you who don't know: If you have ATT Cell service and Directv at home, when traveling, you can use any ATT-enabled device (I use my iPad), to stream LIVE Directv (AND watch DVR'd programs from home receivers) on your cellular network WITHOUT internet and WITHOUT data usage at all!!  This has been true awhile, but I only just learned of it.  I just bought a motorhome a week ago and am so stoked.  I bought a lightening to HDMI adapter and I can live stream Directv even to the TV's in my RV!!  Again, without internet or using data.  Amazing.

@dnta11

Just to be accurate, the Data Free TV service is for postpaid accounts, and will count the data on your device, but does not deduct it from your data plan.  So saying "without data use at all" is not accurate.  It uses data, it just isn't deducted from your allowance.

That's what I meant, but thanks for clarifying for others! 🙂

@dnta11 And the only DirecTV data that doesn't count is data running on DTV apps on phones/tablets that are on a cellular postpaid plan.
