tethering lousy since switching to pre-paid

Not understanding why I can't stream or download over my tether to my tablet due to spotty, slow speeds since switching from a contract plan to pre-paid last weekend. Worked extensively with tech support, they found no network issues. I FIRMLY suspect that ATT provides worse cell service off the local tower for pre-paid than for contract-plans, since the ONLY thing that changed was a sim card.

att store reps deny that possibility with utmost conviction, even though they don't seem to know anything else. They made promises they couldn't keep, tried to sell alternatives obviously insufficient to our needs, and information had to be repeated a number of times, as if they are supplied a quantity of wax for their ears and use it with diligence, serving basically as a firewall between the unwashed masses and corporate glass.

the sad thing is they may ALL be horrid. I wish we'd finished off ma bell when we had the chance.

Hello @mnashp,

I am sorry to hear the quality of service has gone done since you switched to PrePaid.  We definitely do not want any of our customers to have their services declined no matter what type of account they have.  It will be my pleasure to help!

One thing it could be is there is a hiccup in the communication between your phone and our network. Great news, you can refresh the network on your phone by powering off the phone completely, remove SIM card, clean golden contacts, re-insert into device, and power it back on again.

Our Device Support Page has great step-by-step guides on how to remove and re-insert the SIM card. After selecting your phone’s make and model, please go to Tutorials > About Your Device > Phone Assembly/Insert SIM.

I also recommend visiting our Troubleshoot and Resolve Tool for more troubleshooting steps. It is a fantastic resource which gives personalized steps, and can pinpoint the source of the error! After selecting your phone’s make and model, please go to Service/network issues > Internet.

Please let me know if these steps help! Have a wonderful day!

@mnashp

Postpaid plans use both ATT and partner towers.  Prepaid uses ATT only.  So you may have cut your service by switching to prepaid.
