Will Northeast MI ever receive 3G?

I've heard talk about how ATT is "working on their network coverage" and plans to provide 3G service in Northeast MI "in the coming months".  Well, now that another 2 year contract has expired, I'm seriously wondering if I would be better off jumping to Verizon.  The EDGE data network up here if virtually useless.  5 full bars, yet extremely poor data transfer.

Can anyone provide an HONEST answer as to when this coverage is planned to be upgraded???  Verizon has had 3G for quite a long while up here...

Sometime in the next few weeks, look for AT&T to widen their B17 LTE channel from 5 MHz to 10 MHz where they are currently running 5x5. Also, AT&T will soon deploy 10x10 B17 in the Traverse City and Petoskey area, as well as all of northwest lower Michigan. I mentioned in a previous post that they were acquiring the 700 spectrum from Thumb Cell/Agri-Valley. That deal was inked and AT&T will soon be rocking in more areas up north. Unfortunately, however, due to their 2015 budget don't expect very many LTE upgrades or new sites builds this year:/

Sault Ste Marie was supposed to have a new LTE tower on the west end of town. The tower was to be placed on top of the water plant building at Sherman Park. Right now, you can't get a signal in most of the extreme west area of town.

No activity at all this year. So much for promises.

Yep. AT&T significantly reduced investment on the wireless side in Michigan this past year mainly due to the recent DirecTV acquisition. There has been a brand new site near Arnold that was constructed almost two years ago that isn't even online yet. I will say this, when T-Mobile starts lighting up LTE on their new towers across northern Michigan, AT&T may take it seriously when they start losing customers again.

EDIT: On a side note, the towers in Goetzville and on Drummond Island are now running HSPA.

They haven't updated the map for Drummond Island.  The west side of Drummond Island is technically covered by De Tour Village, if I'm not mistaken

The Island is actually covered by this site at the casino.

I just drove past the inactive Arnold Tower and I see two new microwave dishes mounted on the tower, pointed (I think) towards Marquette. I sat and watched the two digital power meters for 10 minutes & they didn't change at all. Hopefully the dishes mean that service MAY start soon. I heard a rumor that at the last Wells Township meeting,[Per Guidelines:  Keep it Relevant and Appropriate].This may account for the appearance of the dishes.....

I see two microwave dishes that may be for the Arnold Tower backhaul. They are located about 15 miles North of the Arnold site, and are mounted on the cell tower on the West side of Gwinn. They appear to point South, so the direction is right. The two dishes are different in style, color, and weather domes, so perhaps two providers will be available.

Yeah it doesn't surprise me they haven't activated that new site near Arnold, which is now owned by American Tower Corp. Same as the other inactive new site near Shingleton, E/SE of Munising. AT&T upgrades have stalled in northern Michigan unfortunately. They had better take notice how aggresive T-Mobile is expanding across northern Michigan, while they still have a decent customer base. The tower in Lewiston was upgraded to 3G back in June, 2013 but nothing has changed since.

Progress at the Arnold Tower:

I stopped at the Arnold Tower this morning and was surprised to see the gate open. There were two vehicles there and personnel from two different businesses. One gentleman said that they were there to begin integration of the tower into the AT&T system. There was a problem up on the tower, which was going to require a climb, but the process is finally started!

That new site near Arnold, MI went live today. Both UMTS(3G) and LTE.

The new LTE Tower at Sherman Park is live now in Sault Ste Marie. The area west of I75 is now covered.
