Coverage in Canada

Bad move AT&T getting in bed with Rogers cell network in Canada. Well known as the worst coverage up here so US customers get bad service when they cross the border? Even major city like Halifax has poor poor coverage! Best coverage here is Telus! Why cant we change prefered provider? A Telus ph switches to AT&T when we head down there but not now! Bad business move and AT&T customers know there is much better coverage up here?

Good Morning @EZZNAME!

Thank you for taking the time to reach out to us in regards to this coverage issue you are experiencing! We never like to hear of our customers having network problems either here in the states or abroad.

Depending on if you are on an International package, or a Mobile Share plan with Canada coverage included, the service will connect to the strongest tower or provider in your area. When you activate these network services in Canada, your service is essentially roaming. Therefore, the strongest network connection in your area will be providing you services.

What’s good is you can usually change your network preference in your phone. You can learn how to perform this by checking out our Device Support Tool. Select your make and model phone, click on View all Solutions > Signal & Cellular Data > locate your Mobile Networks to modify your services selection.

If you have an iPhone device, you can also refer to their support site for additional how to on service selection. To get started, please click here.

I hope this is found to be advantageous. Have a great rest of your day!

@EZZNAME Request to have Manual Network Selection / Manual Carrier Selection enabled, then you should be able to have some choice in which network you use when roaming. I believe you have that kind of access when off the continent, but you need to request it for neighboring countries.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Have to read up more as my S7 Edge does not seem to allow me to change provider. Thats good if it changes to best signal but my wife and I were stuck on Rogers with 1 bar in Alberta and my sister standing beside me with Telus @ full coverage? Will research it more but thanks again for advice appreciated!

You likely have to REQUEST to get it turned on.

Are you talking about an AT&T plan or a Rogers plan?

We are on a AT&T unlimited plus plan and currently traveling in Canada! See it switches provider where ever we are? I assumed to the best provider? We are currently in Nova Scotia and switched to Telus! This is good if it searches for best signal but issue was in Alberta where it was on Rogers and we had a horrible signal when my sisters Canadian phone had Telus which was a much better signal? Just assumed Rogers was AT&T's prefered provider (since they announced a deal) there and they should be aware that Rogers coverage was very poor. Thanks everyone for help and suggestions will look into my phone settings more?

FYI with ATT branded phones you have to contact ATT before you travel to enable changing roaming carriers.  The setting may not be available on every phone.

On non branded phones the option to change carriers is easy.

Most of the time when roaming in Canada with two iPhones 6s they always seemed to roam on different networks. Yesterday, they were both on ROGERS and it stuck me as strange (as they never are).

Unfortunately AT&T no longer allows any roaming on Bell and Telus, so we are stuck on lousy Rogers.

It it worked great in 2017 on the ALCAN, but no more. Now my AT&T phone has no service in Yukon or many other areas of Canada where it used to work.

It really bugs me because they still show all this coverage on their Canada map.

So if we are in an area with only telus coverage will our phones work? If not AT&T needs to correct this situation or they will lose a lot of customers? As Rogers is very incomplete poor service provider but then again all providers in Canada are poor and I live there so I know! AT&T whats the story and solution?
