Hello Community!

We're very excited to kick off our Ask an Expert session! This thread is now open to any and all questions, operators are standing by!

In order to get us going, here are some questions we have received, over the past week, with our experts answers:

    1. If someone chooses to add unlimited data to their plan, what is the initial speed, how long before it drops down to a lower speed, and what is that lower speed?
AT&T GoPhone has 2 monthly plans that include unlimited data usage. The $45 plan includes 4GB of high-speed data, and the $60 plan includes 8GB of high-speed data.

Once the high-speed data allotment is used data speeds are reduced to 128Kbps for the rest of the 30 day term. However, we also have high-speed packages that can be added to some existing plans – upon depleting the high-speed – data speeds are reduced to 128kbps for the rest of the term.

    2. If I use a GoPhone for sending or receiving texts how much am I charged?
AT&T GoPhone $30, $45 and $60 monthly plans and the $2 a day plan include text and video messages from the U.S. at no additional charge. The 25¢ a min plan has a 20¢ rate for each text message sent or received and messaging packages are available.

    3. If someone sends me a photo, am I charged a fee per byte?
GoPhone rate plans charge the same rates to send/receive photo messages as text messages mentioned above.

    4. Can I use wifi for sending/receiving texts or must they use my data connection?
All plans include unlimited text except the 25¢ a min plan – onto which a messaging plan can be added.

If you have an iDevice (iPhone, iPad, etc), you can use iMessages - which is native on the device as the standard texting platform. This is an IP Messaging solution and not really SMS or MMS - you can manually select to send the message as an SMS or MMS in the options; by default it uses the IP Messaging solution.

For Androids, if you have VoLTE you can use AT&T Messages - which will integrate with the native messaging app on the device. Text will use IP Messaging in this case, but for GoPhones (since GoPhone's don’t have VoLTE the messaging solution) regular SMS and MMS ill be used.

IP Messaging solutions will work over Wi-Fi, but SMS and MMS will not work over Wi-Fi.

    5. If I use an installed Google mail app (or Yahoo! mail app, for that matter) - is that going to use my data connection – by constantly checking email and incurring charges or can it be set up to use wifi?
When checking email through an application over the AT&T network, data is charged; however most applications allow this through a wifi connection as well. When using a wifi connects data is not charged.

    6. How can I connect to either of my XP PCs for file transfer?
After following instructions - found on the internet - to install drivers, SDKs, etc. I can "see" my phone in Windows XP but I cannot connect to it to do anything.

    7. Where can I find explicit instructions for connecting my phone to my XP PC - without leaving anything out?
Visit att.com/devicehowto and select your device. On the Tutorial tab, you should find an icon/link to your device’s User manual.

    8. Are there plans to bring back data and text packages for $1 Mobile to Mobile plans?
There are no future plans for the $1 Mobile to Mobile plan; however the $2 a day plan includes unlimited text messages and also have data packages available for purchase.

    9. Where can we find the latest information on Mobile plans?
Information about current AT&T GoPhone plans can be found here https://www.att.com/shop/wireless/gophone-plans.html or you can log into att.com/mygophone.

If you have any additional questions, ask away!

Just a small comment.
If you are roaming with your Gophone on the $45 or $60 plan in Canada.
You need to keep your Sim card up to date.I switch from batch number 4488A (Orange) to 4540A (Green)

It got more bars and connect to  LTE  with Rogers Wireless all the time.

My Mom has a flip phone with Virgin, she pays $20 every 3 months so it's about $80 a year, she probably uses 20-40 minutes a month at the most.

I'd like to get her an iPhone, so she can use it as a camera and it'll intergrate with her computer (iPad) seemlessly and she'll have no problems operating it.

But I don't want to have to activate data on the plan:

  • What's the cheapest route I can go?
I assume I can't put 25 CENTS on the phone for the 25 cents a minute plan so what do I have to put on the phone.
  • What are my per day options for data, if I do want to turn it on when she travels?

And one technical question:

If she has data off on the iPhone and I use iMessage to send her a message to her iPad is it going to be smart enough to turn it in to an SMS to go to the iPhone AND iPad?
(Assume that I have iCloud configured properly)

When is Gophone getting a mobile app so that we can manage our account easier instead of being diverted to the website? When is GoPhone getting wifi calling & online chat customer serivice instead of calling the GoPhone number.

I think $20 is the minimum refill (or first payment) on pay as you go plans.

The $.25 a minute plan does not have a smartphone data-plan available.

@LWJefferson, great questions and we're happy to answer!

The GoPhone web site scales depending on the size of your device. On PC's and Tablets, you get a full screen view and if you're on your Smartphone you'll see a mobile view, but all the information is available. The best benefit is that logging in using the myAT&T app or via www.att.com/gophone you get the same great experience!

We are always evaluating ways to bring new services to GoPhone and communicate with our customers. Thank you for your request for Wi-Fi calling and to service your account via chat. We will take these requests back and share with our teams.
