Defective phone refuses to return

I purchased a phone with AT&T at one of the stores the salesman messed up and the manager had to basically return the phone and redo the whole transaction. Tried using the phone that night only to realize the battery was defective so I returned to the store the next day where I was told the phone was already returned in the system and they couldn’t do anything with it no refund or exchange. They claimed they would have the Area Manager contact me ASAP that was 10 days ago so now I’m stuck with a phone that doesn’t work and out a ton of money . This store should really be investigated for embezzlement because they refunded money to themselves that didn’t belong to them .
