I just activated my phone, and they put me on the wrong plan and when I called to get it changed they said I was going to have to pay the amount again

@fatdaddy24

That's not right.  Call 611 and complain.

Re: New Unlimited GoPhone Plan!

This is all well and good but I discovered no hotspotting is allowed, after I bought it. I want to switch back to the $60 monthly with 8GB but now I can't. Please help!

Re: New Unlimited GoPhone Plan!

I do not know that they can get the $60 8gb plan for you since it is no longer available.  You may be able to call in and complain and then see if they can switch you back.

Note that the $45 6 GB plan does have hotspot

Re: New Unlimited GoPhone Plan!

I just went through this same scenario yesterday & today.  Switched from 8GB $60 to "unlimited" $65 gophone.  Today I could no longer tether, so I had to call 611 and have them switch me back to 8GB plan, so that I could tether again.  The support person was nice, it was an easy enough process, and they seemed to realize that it's not completely clear that tethering isn't allowed with the new plan, per the terms used in the details/fine print.

Shopping around today, I see that for the same money as 8GB total for gophone, with Sprint I can get unlimited and 10GB tethering for the same $60.  With Tmobile I can get the same thing as Sprint for $70.  With Verizon I can get the same thing for $80.  So I have 3 options that are appealing to me, but AT&T doesn't have anything comparable, so I may have to go with one of the alternatives.

After 6 years with AT&T I'd like to stay, but if they can't make a competitive offer...is anyone at AT&T reading this, and if so, can you do anything for me?

Re: New Unlimited GoPhone Plan!

From what you're saying, AT&Ts 8GB for $60 is the same as Sprint's price plan- which is also the lowest.

Re: New Unlimited GoPhone Plan!

No, that's not what I said.

With AT&T you get 8GB total high speed data, and you can tether for $60.

OR

With AT&T you can get "unlimited" high speed data, but NO tethering for $60

With Sprint you can get "unlimited" high speed data, including 10GB for tethering, for $60.

See the difference?

If AT&T would give me the same plan Sprint is offering, I'd definitely stay with AT&T!

Re: New Unlimited GoPhone Plan!

It's great that you're providing me "options", but, if you're reading this AT&T, there should be an option to allow customers with the unlimited plan to either enable the hotspot for an additional fee or switch back to their previous plan without having to pay for a whole new month of service. It is not made clear that this very important feature will be lost when switching plans and I was literally told by an AT&T customer service representative that there was nothing that she could do or that I could do. I was unfortunately "stuck" unless I wanted to pay another $45 in the same day that I had already paid $65. I paid an extra $20 for less than what I had before because all of my data usage was used via tethering. I won't even use an entire gig of data. The whole situation is crooked.

Re: New Unlimited GoPhone Plan!

@Sopeeved, @nod_nod Call and ask to speak to retentions (same deal start with 611, per @lizdance40 above).

I'm hoping @ATTMobilityCare will jump in too, and try to straighten this out, you definitely shouldn't have to pay a charge twice, to go back to a previous plan, particularly when tethering wasn't covered by the upsell.

I use about 80% of my data this way too, so I'm hyper-sensitive if I'm ever considering a different plan, I go to the plan page, search around for "tether" and "hotspot", a tip for the future anyway ;-]

*If this (or another post in this thread) fixes your problem/issue, please mark it as "accept-solution", and I'll tag it, to make it easier for others to find the answer(s). FYI: I'm an AT&T end-user, just like most of us in the forum. Thanks.

Re: New Unlimited GoPhone Plan!

Regarding your tip, I did read the fine print before switching to the "unlimited"
plan, but it wasn't clear because they use different terminology in the details,
compared to the other plans.

For the 6 & 8 GB data plans that allow tethering, it says:
"...you can use it as a Wi-Fi hotspot to share your data with other devices."

But for the new "unlimited" data plan, it says:
"Use of device as a Mobile hotspot is not allowed."

So from this scenario, I've now learned that "mobile hotspot" "Wi-fi hotspot" and
"tethering" all mean the same thing, which wasn't previously clear. It's important
to keep terminology consistant, to ensure everyone might understand. To me,
"mobile" impled actually traveling, where "wi-fi" had a connotation of being
stationary, and in my mind "tethering" was neither, just as a wired LAN connection
isn't a wi-fi connection.

For the new unlimited plan, they could have instead ideally stated:
"Use of device as a mobile or Wi-Fi hotspot or tethering is not allowed."

Now that should make it clear to everyone.

They could even simplify the whole thing, and use consistant terminology, by
simply stating "This plan allows sharing of data to other devices" for the 6 & 8
GB plans, and "This plan does NOT allow sharing of data to other devices" for the
new "unlimited" plan.

Regardless, because the new unlimited plan doesn't allow sharing of data with
other devices, I'll be switching to another provider at the end of the month,
unless at&t wakes up and offers a comparable plan by then.

Re: New Unlimited GoPhone Plan!

Replying to Sopeeved;
"...there should be an option to allow customers with the unlimited plan to... switch back to their previous plan without having to pay for a whole new month of service."

To be clear, I ran out of data on my 8 GB plan, so I switched to unlimited at night while tethered, and used about 1 GB of the new 22GB "unlimited" data on my laptop before disconnecting. The next day when I tried to tether again, my phone popped up a message indicating (paraphrased) "tethering is not allowed on this device. dial 611 to speak with at&t".  So I immediately called, explained the situation and the CSR changed me back to the 8 GB plan, along with assuring me that there were no additional charges since I called right away and the cost of both plans are essentially the same. They also informed me that I'd have to reboot my phone to enable tethering again, although they don't require a reboot when you switch to the unlimited plan and they disable tethering.

The point is, they did this for me and they should do it for you too, along with any/all others in the same situation, so I'd suggest calling them again.

Re: New Unlimited GoPhone Plan!

Will I get better signal strength if I switch to regular wireless or is my gophone signal as good as it gets? Either way, next month I'm getting on one of the unlimited plans but I want to verify whether wireless is better than gophone. Thanks!
