Wired connection problem

The other day I unplugged my ethernet cable from my desktop to use the internet on my laptop. When I went to plug it back into the desktop it wont identify the network. Several things I have tried so far: ip config/release and renew, reset the router, tried a different cable. I'm using windows 7 and the 2wire router that came with the uverse internet. I diagnose the problem and it says "Local area connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration". Any ideas as to what the problem is?

PROBLEM SOLVED

My ethernet port on the motherboard died so all I needed to do was buy a $15 network interface card from any electronics store and install that. Hope this helps other people having the same problem.
