U-verse Now Has 5.7 Million TV Customers - 1st Qtr 2014

From the article in the link found below:

Strong U-verse Gains Drive Broadband Growth. Total U-verse subscribers (TV and high speed Internet) reached 11.3 million in the first quarter. U-verse TV added 201,000 subscribers in the first quarter to reach 5.7 million in service. AT&T has more pay TV subscribers than any other telecommunications company. U-verse high speed Internet had a first-quarter net gain of 634,000 subscribers, to reach a total of 11.0 million. That marks seven consecutive quarters with U-verse broadband net adds of more than 600,000. Overall, total wireline broadband subscribers increased by 78,000. Total wireline broadband ARPU was up 9 percent year over year. Total U-verse high speed Internet subscribers now represent more than two-thirds of all wireline broadband subscribers, compared with 51 percent in the year-earlier quarter.

About 60 percent of U-verse broadband subscribers have a plan delivering speeds of 12 Mbps or higher. In the first quarter, 90 percent of new U-verse TV customers also signed up for U-verse high speed Internet. About two-thirds of AT&T U-verse TV subscribers take three or four services from AT&T. ARPU for U-verse triple-play customers continues to be more than $170. At the end of the quarter, U-verse TV penetration was more than 21 percent. U-verse broadband penetration was near 20 percent at the end of the first quarter.

I've come to learn that ANY news will cause stock prices to fall. Superbowl commercials cause Budweiser's stock to fall, iPhone announcements cause Apple's stock to fall, E3 causes Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft's stock to fall.

I didn't understand that.  EPS was above estimates.  It looked like all the news was good news, but the stock fell anyway?

They have to make a certain amount of money per 1/4 for the share holders. Growing means nothing if you dont make money. That is what happened ...

Making the predicted amount of EPS per quarter is the accepted measure of did you make "enough."  They exceeded the predicted EPS.  They had revenue growth.  They had net revenue growth.

As DD#2 (licensed financial advisor) will tell anyone, don't worry about what a stock does in ONE day.  It makes her crazy when clients will call after seeing their stock prices fall slightly in one day, screaming "SELL...SELL...SELL!!!!"

ATT's 52 week hi/low is $31.74 and $37.97 closing at $34.50 down slightly more than 1%.

As U-Verse edges near 6 million TV subscribers, that should give AT&T more clout, in channel negotiations.

As stated 5.7 million is 21% of market penetration or 27.14 million current possible subscribers, without additional new markets or filling in pockets.

Consider most markets have at least 4 choices... cable, 2 satellite and a telco, what is estimated overmarket saturation point for any one type. Presently the telcos have about 11% of overall US market with Fios and Uverse but the two are not in all states where the market exists.

As both telco offerings were introduced in 2006, no longer a start up but not yet a mature product in an ever changing technology field... is it unrealistic to expect maximum penetration will be 25-30% with a target of 28% yielding about 7.7 million iptv subscribers. This would add 2 million more subscribers or 35% to existing base.

Admitted that a gigafiber expansion would likely raise to 30%+ (8.2-8.5 million). Additional growth through added value services and expansion (auto, home security, streaming video, business services as examples)

During this growth, change, transformation new employees will be added, trained and brought up to speed but customer service in sales, installation and support will initially suffer but as experience by this new work force is gained this effect should be minimum.

My point, expect to see solid but possible slower growth with improved performance in all customer experiences.

Just my thoughts....

21% is a very high level of penetration for an "over builder."  Especially with the maturity of the satellite offerings bringing them into near parity with the wire-line cable operators.

An earlier report stated roughly 55% of tv subscribers on cable, 32% satellite, 10% telco, balance other such as muni.

Eight years ago telco was 0%, believe both FIOS and Uverse first installs were 2nd half of 2006. As customers welcomed the opportunity to try another options, at what point %wise is these offerings mature and stable?

Will Comcast, if successful with TW purchase and subsequently sell off of markets to Charter drive customers to Uverse or away?

After Project VIP completion end of 2015, will Uverse be like Fios and stop future deployment and concentrate on increasing customer uptake in existing markets?

How many communities willing to give necessary concessions for fiber concentration? How fast for deployment, and percent of expected uptake?

Some in Austin state while thankful for upgrade will probably switch if and when Google becomes available... same thinking of switching from cable when Uverse became available... try something new or past experience not meeting expectations. The same problems in any relationship.

It started with a major multi-year

initiative, called Project VIP, to deploy

high-speed connectivity on a massive

scale. When we launched this effort, we

committed to bring the most advanced

wireless service to 300 million people

across the United States.

In essence Project VIP is a multi pronged plan to increase
1) Mobility (wireless cell service)
2) HSIA both as asdl2+ on vdsl platforms
3) IPTV on vdsl platforms
4) Digitial Life home security (?)
5) purchase additional spectrum
And more...

$14 billion over three years....

Recent news has ATT and partner committing more than $500 million to start competing service to Netflix and Hulu.

Now following possible Comcast purchase of TW with minor sale to Charter and a spin off company, AT&T in discussion of possible purchase of a satellite company if completed would be 2nd in overall subscribers after Comcast/TW

I wonder if this goes thru and the customer is in a Non-AT&T area, such as PA, what they will do for internet and phone servies?  DirecTV covers all of the US, but AT&T only covers 22 states.

I don't think you'd see any significant changes in the way the two business lines are operated in regards to service areas or much of anything else.

As contracts for content come up for renewal, I think you'd then see a change in the way these negotiations are handled (i.e. with the combined subscriber count in mind).

My thoughts is to improve internet speeds and reduce or eliminate bandwidth sharing with IPTV, install mini dishes aimed at VRAD for IPTV and maintain hardwire for HSIA, VOIP services.

As a partnership already exists between the two both selling the others products and services, a purchase would allow quality control and improved billing/accountability on shared plans.

while Uverse is only in defined 22 states (21 after Frontier purchases Conn.) The AT&T (and Verizon) vision and growth is beyond defined borders.
Present day examples outside of defined 22 states include wireless cell service, Digitial Life, new venture offering online streaming to compete against Netflix, Hulu, Automotive)

The largest private sector Union Employer AT&T growth versus largest non union retailer Walmart which is moving into financial services, banking and money transfers is a interesting study.

Consider online streaming future and DirectTV http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSBREA242GU20140306?irpc=932

add ATT future streaming and the future results of Supreme Court ruling in Aereo case...
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/supreme-court-will-hear-tv-broadcasters-against-aereo/blogEntry?id=21...

The next 12 to 20 months (end of Project VIP) leads to an interesting future.
