One America News Gets U-Verse Berth

From the link below:

Herring Networks said its One America News Network has reached a deal to be launched by AT&T U-verse TV across the country.

One America News Network will soon join the U-verse channel lineup in the cable news neighborhood on channel 208 in standard definition and on channel 1208 in high definition, the channel said. The broad carriage by AT&T U-Verse will give the independent, conservative news network more than 5 million additional subscribers, the programmer said.

The startup, conservative-leaning news network (which launched July 4, 2013, and extensively covered the Conservative Political Action Conference this past spring under a sponsorship pact with American Conservative Union), had already obtained a carriage deal with the other big telco-TV provider, Verizon FiOS TV, though the U-verse distribution appears to be wider than the FiOS launch, which has the HD channel in the Ultimate HD package.

“We’re thrilled to give U-verse TV customers more choices by adding One America News Network to our channel lineup,” Ryan Smith, vice president of content acquisition at AT&T, said in a release. “The network is devoted to providing an independent and dependable source for news reporting around the clock along with commentary, programming and documentaries.”

“We’re extremely pleased for the support extended by AT&T U-verse in providing carriage to One America News Network. We’re grateful for the broad distribution and the channel placement within the cable news neighborhood next to other leading cable news networks,” Robert Herring senior, CEO of One America News Network, said in the release. “U-verse TV customers will be able to easily find our news channel and we’re confident that our programming lineup of national and international news, interactive talk shows, and current affairs programs will resonate well with U-verse TV customers.”

U-verse also carries Herring's Wealth of Entertainment, “AWE,” formerly WealthTV, on channel 470 in SD and 1470 in HD.

The more new channels SD and HD the better. Who says that U-Verse never adds channels, but only takes them away?

Maybe The Blaze and Al Jazeera America will follow.

I think this shows programmers how wise a choice it is to go to AT&T.  There's a multi-page thread over at DSLR in the Comcast TV forum entitled, "Does Comcast ever add channels?"  Even though Comcast is the biggest, they sure don't add like AT&T, which is pretty striking.  When Procter & Gamble wants to push a new Febreze or Tide iteration, isn't WalMart one of the first places customers see it?

It shows how AT&T is technologically prepped for this.  It's relatively simple for AT&T to add services to its platform, versus the others.  Cable companies are limited by each of their headends' mHz bandwidth.  Satellite companies have to build a new "reflector" (satellite), launch it, and do everything just-so because even THEY have to support customers' old dishes and old equipment.  If they don't, certain customers might be forced to add another dish on their house or be forced to upgrade equipment.  Personally, I haven't heard anyone speak highly of a satellite tech visit (similar to the big cable companies).

With Uverse, AT&T works out the programmer's placement via how much they want per customer, sets up the downlink, and pushes it out to the customer.  Plus AT&T places it where customers would naturally find it, not on channel 349 in SD and 833 in HD because those are the only ones open.

As for Al Jazeera America, it doesn't look like anyone with AT&T is missing anything.  For all of their hype and carriage with everyone else, they're only getting around 15,000 TOTAL viewers in primetime, with 5000 being in the "coveted" 25-54 range.  And they laid off staff -- notably freelancers (cheap labor).  If they're laying off those people, the top-heavy contract employees (those stolen from CNN and others) are sure soaking them. ----- Normally, companies actually lay-off regular employees and replace them with contract-specific (limited term) or "freelancers" who will simply get paid for one-time work.  Link here: http://www.thewrap.com/al-jazeera-america-low-ratings-image-problems

Remember, also, that when AJA made a "deal" with Time Warner, it was suggested that AJA was either paying-for or bartered-for carriage.  The old "Current" was getting around 12 cents a subscriber, and Time Warner was reportedly asking for less than that.

Anyways, if anyone's looking for a wider selection of TV services available, the choice is fast becoming Uverse over the others.

The press release says "soon."

The longer version? No one here knows. It'll just show up on the guide one day. There's two ways it'll show up. The first is that it'll show up on the guide and when you turn to it, it'll say "coming soon" with a blue screen. The other way is that when you turn to it, it'll be an active, live channel.

No word on if it'll be 1080, 720, stretch-o-vision, or the infamous "SD HD" black bars. Thankfully, the last one is ultra-rare...even commercials these days are HD.

I'm not sure about the technology part - I have heard from both a U-Verse contract specialist and one on the technical side that it is much harder (and more expensive) to add channels to U-Verse as more equipment is required for each channel.  I think that adding channels (and keeping them) is now easier as U-Verse strides up near 6 million TV subs.

Not sure everyone would understand all the bits of the AT&T "sausage making," but I was really speaking of the way a vast majority of the US gets its pay-TV service: the good old cable company.

For instance, for all of the "innovation" touted for X1, Comcast's majority of headends/systems are maxed out when it comes to TV services.  In fact, they actually took AWAY premiums in HD in order to add regular HD (like Sprout and C-SPAN, for example).  VOD, in peak hours, STILL doesn't connect because of overloads.  X1 is still dependent upon what the local headend will feed it, which is why even if the local system in Atlanta may have Boomerang, the system in Philadelphia will not.

Uverse, however, is much more like satellite in that way.  As we all saw with the power outage that occurred a few weeks ago, the Uverse "national grid", if you will, appears in everyone's home, with the local office "inserting" the local section of channels (from 2-69).  So even if it's "technically complicated" to add a channel, it's only in one location.  The Uverse uplink center sends everything out and the local office pulls in the signal, interprets it and puts it in order, then pumps it out to the localities served by that office.

IMHO if AT&T can add channels regularly and my bill doesn't go up, that's fine with me.  If it was that difficult (translation: costly) for them to do these things, we would certainly see it on a monthly basis.
