Longhorn Network - Just say 'No'

I greatly appreciate the value provided by AT&T in bundling tv/wireless/internet services.  Similarly, the bundling of channels allows customers to access a variety of programming at substantial savings.

However, occasionally, programming comes along that is so expensive and directed at such a narrow, niche market that it deserves to be left off of the programming options or ordered solely as an 'a la carte' option.  If the reports about the price tag  to cable providers  to offer the 'longhorn network' (by ESPN) are accurate, the only way it could be added to current bundled programming packages is at substantial cost to MANY people who have no interest in the programming.

Please AT&T, keep prices low, by either not offering or charging ONLY those who desire this programming option.

Thanks!

Well very interesting ATT since smaller cable companies and Verizon Fios can do it. You are a large company and make plenty of money on high rates. JUST MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!

It's all about the Benjamin's.  ESPN is requesting higher per subscriber fees for Texas customers than those customers outside of the state.  Thus, the more customers that a TV provider has in Texas, the higher will be the cost to added the channel.  AT&T has significantly more Texas subscribers than Verizon FIOS or those smaller cable companies who have added the channel.  It will cost providers like AT&T U-verse and Time Warner Cable quite a bit more to add the channel  because of their high number of Texas subscribers.

Why on earth would I want Uverse to charge me money for a crap network I don't want.  I already pay for enough other channels I don't watch.  The LHN is DOA in the current form--nobody wants it except a select group and the network is at risk of many legal hurdles if UT abandons the Big 12.  If AT&T must carry, make it a pay channel like HBO, but better yet, JUST SAY NO!

I agree, the big ten network, wgn and numerous cub stations. Give me the Longhorn network. I will surely leave once an alternative offers the network in my area. I wish Verizon came to my part of Dallas., When I called in one rep read a memo saying that verizon had an exclusive, about an hour later Grande was on. I also said I would cancel when an alternative was available and the lady said I can get you to disconnect now.

This may have been discussed already, but what legal ramifications exist if the Big 12 blows up with Texas and others leaving that conference? Are there legal ramifications with ESPN if this happens? Will the Longhorn Network continue or will that be the end of it?

I don't believe there are any legal ramifications.  The only thing the LHN is preventing, is UT going to the PAC-12.  THey will not allow UT to keep their network if they join.  The Pac-12 has their own national network and 2 regional networks that will start airing next year.

As Abraham J. Simpson would agree with me, There are way too Channels devote to College Sports These days. For the less then 10 people who really want to watch this network 24/7 and all those another Upcoming College Sports Networks, they should all launch as Broadband Channel so everyone wants it, can get access to it.

If OU goes to the Pac-12 that will never happen.  As much as I would love to have an all  OU network, the Pac-12 is starting a national and two regional networks of their own and will not let any of their schools have their own network.

I want the Longhorn Network. 10's of 1,000's of Texas Fans want The Longhorn Network.

If AT&T would sign on for this channel they would reap major benefits. How many people would change from Time Warner or Direct TV? 1,000's. And you want to argue..40 cents? Charge me $4.00 a so you can make 10X my .40 every month.

How many new Time Warner, Direct TV or Dish customers would it take to make this profitable?

Please get real. The first carrier  in my area that  has the LHN is getting my Business.

AT&T is headquartered in the state of Texas. They should have been the first to sign on.

Went through 8 pages of this thread, and decided to just post this, whether it was posted before or not.

When Big Ten was trying to get Comcast to carry it before the first football season they were going to broadcast, BTN (Fox Sports) was trying to paint Comcast as the problem. But when Comcast told of how BTN wanted close to $1.00 per subscriber on their systems within the Big 10 conference area, yet only wanted $0.25 per subscriber elsewhere nationwide, public sentiment turned ugly. Yet Comcast was more than happy to agree to their demands, IF they could put it on the Sports Pack, which of course BTN would not agree to.

I'd imagine ESPN is demanding the same sort of deal. With ESPN's huge fees already, how can they not ask something like $0.10 or $0.15 and package it with their other "digital service" level channels like Classic, News, and U, to at least get it off the ground? They're not going to have tons of programming, just like how BTN was their first seasons, because of other contracts already in place. ESPN is getting too big for their britches.

The game is KU vs UT.  The way UT played today I wouldn't put it past KU beating them.  Oklahoma made them look like a high school team today.

First, let me say that I have no problem if U-verse chooses to set up The Longhorn Network as a Premium channel, I'll gladly pay.  But for those of you saying you'd switch immediately & you don't want to support UT or their fans' 'habit' let me say that you support Golf & Tennis fans' habits, as do I.  And I hate Golf!!  Also UT doesn't need anyone's financial support, even before ESPN gave them $300M they were still the 2nd richest college in the country (behind only Harvard).  It's not UTs fault that Texas A&M had no foresight & turned down a partnership or that ESPN may not be interested in giving the other smaller schools in the Big 12 their own network.  Smiley Happy

If your athletic director had any foresight the channel would also include A&M sports, but apparently decided he A&M didn't need $150M.  Go figure!

ESPN would have been smarter to try to get it setup as a Big 12 channel, like Big Ten Network:

Compared to other conferences, the Big 12's revenue is low for a BCS conference; this is due in part to television contracts signed with Fox Sports Net (four years for $48 million) and ABC/ESPN (eight years for $480 million) that are set to expire in 2012 and 2016, respectively.

The Big Conference has to approve the creation of a Big 12 Network TV channel.  It is not something that can be decided by ESPN.  The idea of creating a conference TV channel has been rejected by the conference schools in the past.

Yes, I understand that ESPN just can't go ahead and do this on their own. But as they will be the broadcast partner filling the Big 12 coffers after 2012's expiration of FSN's contract, it almost behooves the conference to try to pursue this avenue. The only reason the conference is against such an idea is because of THEIR own setup of revenue sharing amongst themselves -- no fault of ESPN. If ESPN would work with them to elevate their presence overall, and it could eliminate the squabbling because U-T gets the lionshare of revenues. All of that extra exposure wouldn't just be a benefit to ESPN, but to the conference overall -- and at a decent price to bring that to a nationwide audience.

No, that is not the reason.  Several years ago, the SEC also rejected the idea of creating a TV network.  The SEC has a different revenue sharing model than the Big 12.  Only 2 conferences currently have their own TV network (i.e. Big Ten Conference and the Mountain West Conference).  The PAC 12 will join those ranks sometime next year.

If it was as easy and beneficial for conferences to have their own TV network as you indicate, all of the major conferences and some of the other conferences would have their own TV network.  The conferences are not going to turn their backs on what they consider a viable moneymaking opportunity.

Wikipedia Big 12 Conference

Not sure where that site got it's information from unless it's several years old.  The Big 12 and Fox Sports just signed a

$1.7 Billion contract recently and goes for the next 16 years.  Granted the ABC/ESPN contract is smaller than other BCS conferences, it's still respectable at $60/year. Between the two networks, it's about $200 million/year.  That money is now going to be divided equally.

Didn't know about the FSN renewal, and that info changes a few things. But I'll leave that to the experts.

It does, though, now lend more credence to ESPN getting too big for their britches, and trying to just basically benefit itself over the conference schools' interests, including U-T's.

Just want to voice my opinion; If ATT U-verse adds this ESPN driven garbage channel and attempts to charge me additional for having it, I will drop U-Verse no matter how much I like it! Please don't add it!

A lot of knee-flex reactions to the Longhorn Network.  The Longhorns play nearly every division I school in the state in a lot of sports- would be nice to see my SHSU Bearkats this weekend in baseball.  Might be nice to see your (insert name of team) in (insert name of sport).  With ESPN production it would look a lot better than the  other regional sports channels, you know- the one that hardly shows any local schools?!?!  Most people in TX did not go to UT but they sure could benefit from the teams UT plays.  Schools like Lamar, Sam Houston, UTSA,UTA, SFA, Baylot, TX Tech, TCU, UH, TSUSM, UTEP, PVAMU, not to mention other schools from outside TX.  Or you can watch your BYU channel...it sure has a lot for TX folk to enjoy...
