Anyway, I completely agree we are not getting out monies worth from att.  I have made my concerns well known with tech support but 99% of them ('my thoughts' excluded) are less than no help. They read from their que cards and don't know anything about the inner workings of the uverse sysytem.  I realize this wasn't a very productive post on my part, just wanted to let you know you aren't alone in this battle. Lets hope for the best in the next software update so we can get what we pay for.

The issue is that there are two ways of interpreting the numeric color values in the HDMI spec.  One interpretation uses all of the possible values in one 8 bit octet, or byte.  The other interpretation ignores the difference in the values from 0-15  (treating them all as 0) and 240-255 (treating them all as 255).  You get crushed blacks when the receiver and the TV use different intepretations.  Sometimes your TV will have "black level" setting you can change that will correct this by matching the receiver's interpretation.  As will Component Cabling of good quality, by avoiding this HDMI spec issue.  As you have found, the quality of your HDMI cable will not correct this issue.

The really sad thing is that this problem existed in the first generation of U-verse TV receivers and was fixed in firmware.  Then they came out with a new generation of receivers and the problem returned for the new generation.

I have also noticed that HDMI is darker than it should be, but component is pretty good.  I hope they fix the HDMI crushed blacks issue.
