Receiving Calls from People Saying I called Them
There is a common scamming practice known as number spoofing where one’s phone number can be used to call other people and attempt to get personal and private information. This is illegal and almost impossible to stop, as this practice allows scammers to personally choose the number that will be shown on the recipient’s caller ID. We recommend not sharing your information if you are unsure of the caller's identity.
If you suspect that you are a victim of this scam, there are several things you can do:
AT&T Call Protect Service - There's an app for that
- AT&T Call Protect App and security apps. The app is able to automatically detect some Spam calls and gives you the ability to block them.
AT&T ActiveArmor
- AT&T ActiveArmor Security. Additional security at no extra cost.
Change Your Number
As a last resort, we do have the option to change your phone number which may act as a deterrent but is not a guaranteed solution.
Stay Informed
We also recommend that you read over our recommended security guidelines to ensure your account is safe from any sort of possible fraudulent activity.
Is my Account Affected?
Your account or usage is in no way affected by number spoofing.

This practice that allows scammers (or any others bent on dishonesty) to personally choose the number that will be shown on the recipient’s caller ID--aka call spoofing--should be banned worldwide. Let's get the ban going, instead of being wallowing in the mire of inertia that says: Oh, it 's so hard! or Oh, t'would be pert near impossible!! Anyone here who suggests those kinds of things takes the side of the spoofer/scammers.

AT&T knows all about this, and COULD stop it, but the telemarketers make almost 1 BILLION per year, and can afford to pay off executives, as well as Congress.

many billions more the current crop of scammers are making. I agree with your other point: We have the finest Congress money can buy.

Answer these calls with “911 what’s your emergency?” you will stop getting these calls
